Macclesfield Town and Newport County share ‘Unsponsored Derby’ trophy

They’ll do it all again in January.

The first piece of silverware contested between Football League has been shared tonight at Moss Rose, as Macclesfield Town and Newport County drew 1-1 in the ‘Unsponsored Derby’.

A perfect start from Padraig Amond put Newport ahead inside the first minute, with the Silkmen levelling through Emmanuel Osadebe midway through the first half.

The fixture marks the first meeting of two teams that have been unsponsored by Paddy Power this season, as part of their Save Our Shirt campaign.

The Save Our Shirt cup will be contested again when these sides meet in the reverse fixture on January 28th.

Paddy Power also unsponsored almost all of the ground’s perimeter advertising boards, as well as the Man of the Match award – which was given to Corey O’Keeffe.

Asked about the game spokesman Paddy Power said: “It looked great to see two of our unsponsored teams play for the inaugural Unsponsored Derby tonight. It ended in a draw, which means I can at least cancel the engraving.

“The cup will be contested again in January when these sides meet at Rodney Parade, so we will keep the trophy and medals safe until then.
