Lincoln vs Everton: Moise Kean to score anytime – 6/5
After winning promotion to League One last season, it seemed as though Lincoln were going to follow that up when they won each of their first three games and rocketed to the top of the third tier of English football.
They also knocked Championship side Huddersfield out of the League Cup.
They have tailed off somewhat since, however, and have lost their last two games against MK Dons and Doncaster. Lincoln are still only two points off the top though and will hope to remain competitive as the season unfolds.
Their reward for dumping Huddersfield out of is to welcome Everton to Sincil Bank on Wednesday, which is about as lucrative a tie as a team can hope for at this stage of the competition.
Everton have endured a lukewarm start to their Premier League campaign, despite spending a good deal of money over the summer.
A win, a draw and a defeat against opponents, who won’t be featuring at the top end of the table, is hardly cause for optimism and Everton will want to improve following the international break.
This cup tie comes at a good time for The Toffees though, and they will surely use it to give new signing Moise Kean a proper run out.
The former Juventus striker has so far been restricted to appearances from the bench and will look to make his mark against a lower quality of opponent.
Newcastle vs Leicester: Leicester to win – Evens
Virtually no one saw Newcastle’s win at Spurs coming. The Magpies had been given the run around by Teemu Pukki and co at Carrow Road one week previous, and many expected another hiding in North London.
However, Steve Bruce’s charges were rigid and disciplined, and limited Spurs to few goalscoring opportunities. It was a desperately needed result for Bruce, even at this early stage of the season.
Leicester, meanwhile, have started the season incredibly promisingly. Credible draws against Wolves and Chelsea were followed by an away win at previously unbeaten Sheffield United.
James Maddison’s pass to release Jamie Vardy was a thing of particular beauty and it will be interesting to watch that partnership this season – with Youri Tielemans pulling the strings behind them in midfield.
Both sides are bound to rest players on Wednesday and Leicester’s greater squad depth just looks that bit stronger than Newcastle’s.
Burnley vs Sunderland: Burney (-1) – 7/5
It’s crazy to think that this was a Premier League fixture only two years ago.
Sunderland’s play-off heartache last May would have been a tough one to stomach, but they have rebounded quite well so far, taking 11 points from their opening five games.
The season is long, however, and Sunderland would be well advised to extract themselves from the League Cup as soon as possible.
They should have no problems doing so against a Burnley side that has started the season very well, going to Arsenal and Wolves and giving both teams a very good game, as well as hammering Southampton on an opening day.
Burnley are likely to rest players, but should comfortably have enough for their League One opponents at Turf Moor.
