AFCON 2019: Two low-scoring affairs will land our 3/1 quarter-final double

It's Senegal v Benin and Nigeria v South Africa on Wednesday evening

Senegal v Benin: Senegal to win to nil – 5/6

Wednesday 17:00

This won’t come as a surprise to you, but Senegal are a really good team.

Since the World Cup last summer they’ve played 11 matches and won nine of them. Eight of those nine wins have been won to nil, so in light of that pretty remarkable stat we think a price of 5/6 is pretty generous.

Aliou Cisse’s men went down to Algeria in the group stages but have bounced back strongly after that setback, winning 3-0 and 1-0 against Kenya and Uganda respectively.

This is a team that shuts up shop when they go in front, and we don’t think it’ll be any different when they take on a Benin side who’ve reached this stage of the tournament without winning a match. Benin also went goalless in two of their four AFCON matches so far. We think this could be the nap of the day.

Pick: To Win To Nil – Senegal – 5/6

Nigeria v South Africa: Under 1.5 match goals – 5/4

Wednesday 20:00

Betting on a low-scoring AFCON result has long been a smart punter’s trick. There’s no escaping the fact that a lot of Cup of Nations matches end 0-0 or are decided by a single goal.

So we’re not planning to buck that trend here. Nigeria beat Cameroon 3-2 in the previous round, but their first two fixtures were both 1-0 wins, while South Africa’s results were as follows: 1-0, 1-0, 0-1, 0-1.

It’s not ridiculous to suggest, therefore, that goals will be at a premium. You might be tempted by a Nigeria 1-0 Correct Score bet at 4/1, or 0-1 in favour of South Africa at 15/2 – but we’re playing it a bit safer with a 5/4 punt on there being one or fewer goals in the match.

That gives you the safety net of not having to pick a winner, as well as leaving open the option that we’re in for a classic AFCON nil-all.

Pick: Under 1.5 total match goals – 5/6
