Watch: Referee trolls former Newcastle trialist with perfect use of VAR

Legia Warsaw, the reigning league champions, played host to Cracovia in the Polish Ekstraklasa needing a win to keep within touching distance of table-toppers Lechia Gdańsk and let’s just say Legia had zero CRAC!

Not only did Legia suffer a 2-0 defeat, but one of their players was also on the receiving end of the greatest VAR decision recorded to date — and while it might seem like pure sh*thousery, it was technically correct – which is the best kind of correct.

Having already been booked in the game, William Rémy initially received a second yellow card for a foul on Cracovia’s midfield maestro Javi Hernandez in the 74th minute.

The Frenchman left the field of play, but then referee Piotr Lasyk consulted VAR about the decision and determined that he’d gotten it wrong. Sort of.

Rémy was invited back out to the pitch and informed that the booking had been rescinded. Happy days, he goes jogging back into position.

Lasyk then stops the Legia defender and flashes a straight red card instead. Absolutely fantastic, Mr. Lasyk, you are now our new favourite official — somebody get this man a can of Coke.

Of course, the decision has relevant consequences given that a straight red will come with a longer ban, but we prefer to focus on Rémy’s bemused expression and subsequent wry smile as he realises that the referee has trolled him spectacularly.

Legia were already 2-0 down when the foul occurred, so we figure Rémy took his gaffer’s instruction to “stamp that little sh*t out of the game” a little too literally.

Still, this is probably the greatest career moment Rémy has experienced since scoring for Newcastle United’s reserves in a 5-0 demolition of the mighty Gateshead while on trial back in 2011.
