He may not have the numbers of Cristiano Ronaldo or the brand reach of Neymay Jr, but Peter Crouch is undoubtedly one of the best football follows on twitter.

The former Spurs and Liverpool striker’s quick wit and lack of ego, despite being Premier League hero and England centre-forward, make him stand out in a timeline of professionally managed feeds and obsessive image control.

Last week, the big man – who, I don’t know if you heard, is surprisingly good with his feet – rose above the twitter chaff with his reaction to the birth of the royal baby:
