Who should the top six Premier League sides be looking to sign in January?

Don't bother with scouts, lads. We've got you covered.

As you’re aware by now, the January transfer window is completely pointless. However, it does mean that, for a week at least, Sky Sports News can do slightly more than repeat the same four ten-minute segments over and over again. With that being said, here’s a player that each top-six club should sign before the window shuts.

P.S. – please spare Jim White the traumatic on-air experiences.

Manchester City: Matthias Ginter (Borussia Monchengladbach)

Some people like John Stones. Those people are his family, and bizarrely – Pep Guardiola. City won’t be changing their style of play any time soon and while Stones typically isn’t found out against lesser opposition, he’s got the composure of yer Da on First Dates. Not to mention he’s got a lot of injury problems. It’s time to move on, and Ginter – albeit under a five-year-deal – is the ideal replacement. He’s calm on the ball, he’s superb in the air and due to his nationality – ruthlessly efficient.

Manchester United: Alessandro Florenzi (Roma)

It might seem rich coming off the back of Antonio Valencia’s absolute thunderbolt of a strike against Stoke City, but the Ecuadorian is thirty-two now and he’ll need to be replaced. Mourinho should opt to maintain experience levels though and add Florenzi. His versatility is a huge asset to any squad and he’s notably frustrated with Roma’s form at present. The one-club man has an affinity with Roma, but the lure of one of the best managers in the world might be enough to force a deal.

Liverpool: Jan Oblak (Atletico Madrid)

It’s everywhere. It could happen. It should happen. Liverpool’s inconsistencies can easily be traced back to an underlying nervousness when it comes to their back four and goalkeeper. A Tory manifesto would give you more confidence than Simon Mignolet, so this is the right move for the football club. If they’re to progress, they must address their actual issues. This is a key one.

Chelsea: Alfred Finnbogason (Augsburg)

Chelsea should hit reset. Conte’s fallen into that second-season slump where he’s overthinking things and far too much of that pressure is falling on the shoulders of Alvaro Morata. He needs a goalscorer to complement him, and there’s very few better natural finishers than Finnbogason. Even the Chelsea website only lists two strikers – wake up, Antonio.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lucas Moura (PSG)

This would be quite a coup. The form of Angel Di Maria and the presence of Kyllian Mbappe alone is enough to know that Lucas Moura should be off. While it’s notably difficult to have Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli in the same team in their preferred positions, there’s nothing quite like competition and Lucas Moura would nail down that right flank berth. With Son’s recent form, what a front four that could be.

Arsenal: Johannes Geis (Schalke 04)

That driving force and backbone that Arsenal have been lacking now for over a decade is available in the shape of 24-year-old Johannes Geis. He’s still developing and on the periphery of the German national side. He also doesn’t quite show the same ill-discipline as Granit Xhaka, nor does he share his low football IQ. Geis has looked exceptionally comfortable in La Liga, while on loan at Sevilla. Wenger’s often criticised for investing in unproven commodities, but this one has a very high ceiling.
