Odds slashed on Garry Monk returning to Swansea after sudden Boro departure

Could the former Swans legend be on his way home?

Paddy Power have slashed the odds on Garry Monk returning to Swansea, after his sudden departure from Middlesbrough on Saturday night.

Though he was under pressure on Teeside, his side’s comeback win over Sheffield Wednesday was presumed to have bought him more time in the hot-seat – but a vague club statement just hours later announced his departure.

As a result, the odds on Monk succeeding Paul Clement at struggling Swansea have fallen from 66/1 all the way to 11/4.

The early favourite for his old job at the Riverside is Tony Pulis (1/4), with Nigel Pearson (4/1) and Slaven Billic (7/1) also amongst the leading contenders – and a shock return of their own for Aitor Karanka rated at 10/1.

Asked about Monk’s future spokesman Paddy Power said: “Maybe Monk should’ve just made a vow of celibacy to Swansea, as he’s struggled to hold down a managerial relationship since leaving South Wales.

“The timing of his departure from Boro is definitely suspicious, and the wording of the club’s statement did little to normalise it – forcing us to dramatically lower the odds of a surprise return to the Liberty Stadium.”
