Jermain sir-foe? Odds on striker award cut amid SPOTY controversy

Could we be hearing arise Sir Defoe after the BBC Sport awards?

Jermain Defoe’s exclusion from the Sports Personality of the Year shortlist has sparked outrage, with many pointing to the striker’s friendship with tragic Bradley Lowery as an outstanding reason for nomination.

However, we believe that Defoe IS in line for acknowledgement and go odds-on at 1/3 that he lands a specially created award at the Sports Personality of the Year ceremony on Sunday.

They also think that Defoe will be in for more recognition in the New Year honours list – with an MBE a short price at 5/4.

He’s also 2/1 to receive an OBE, and 10/1 to be knighted.

Asked about recognition for the Bournemouth striker spokesman Paddy Power said: “Jermain’s genuine emotional investment in tragic young Bradley Lowery not only raised the profile of the youngster’s campaign and charity, it rose his spirits for his final few months.

“Most players barely tolerate their mascots, let alone become best friends with them. For that, we’re sure Jermain will Defoe get a raft of deserved awards and honours.”
