Liverpool fans fume at Lovren after he turns derby demolition into a draw

Oh Dejan, what were you thinking?

Liverpool fans were left with a familiar feeling of frustration today after failing to turn utter domination of a game into a victory.

Manager Jurgen Klopp won’t escape his share of the blame after a strange Merseyside derby team selection, which omitted Brazilian superstars Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho. However, it was centre back Dejan Lovren’s moment of madness with less than 15 minutes to go that made him the villain of this piece.

Liverpool capped a first half, where they barely let Everton up for air, with a beautiful strike from Mohamed Salah to give them a 1-0 lead at the break. It was more of the same in the second period as The Reds rampaged forward in waves with attack-after-attack.

It looked for all the world like Liverpool where cruising to victory until Wayne Rooney launched an accurate long ball to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and as the young Everton forward took the ball into the box, Lovren inexplicably decided to shove him in the back as he went away from goals.

Wayne Rooney would convert from the spot and Everton would hold on for a 1-1 draw, despite the fact they only recorded 21% possession in the game – the lowest number of any team in the Premier League since the 2003/04.

At the final whistle Lovren immediately ran to confront referee Craig Pawson, but Liverpool supporters were in not doubt who was at fault for the result and have been letting the Croatian have it ever since:
