Maribor v Liverpool – Daniel Sturridge

WHAT A GAME THIS IS GOING TO BE, said absolutely no-one in the build-up to this one. Liverpool should win by two or three goals – in truth, anything less would be a disappointment against a side best described as ‘Slovenian’.

So, for HSJP the real question is: which Liverpool player will score first?

If he starts, and due to the weaker opposition it’s not unreasonable to think he’ll get the nod, Daniel Sturridge would appear to be the prime candidate. Sturridge is a man who can pick apart lesser outfits, and Maribor are a side who ought to have ‘lesser outfit’ embroidered on their kit.

Manchester City v Napoli – Gabriel Jesus

Given the Brazilian’s stellar performance against Stoke, it would be ludicrous to pick anyone else.

The 20-year-old is already establishing himself as one of the finest forwards in Europe, and with the likes of Kevin de Bruyne and David Silva feeding him, it will be hard for Napoli to keep him out.

Based on his current form, you wouldn’t bet against him bagging more than just a single goal.

Real Madrid v Tottenham – Cristiano Ronaldo

How nice to have the option of choosing CR7 in Hotshot Jackpot!

It’s tempting to go for football’s deadliest mouth-breather, Harry Kane, but the novelty of actually being able to pick Ronaldo is too hard to resist. That aside, the Portuguese maestro is one of the finest goalscorers of his generation, so despite the lethal vein of form in which Kane finds himself, El Haircut gets the nod.

Benfica v Manchester United – Romelu Lukaku

I’m not sure there’s much need to explain the logic behind this one. The Belgian spearhead is on fire at the moment – don’t waste too much time considering other options.

Robert Lewandowski celebrates with Poland

Bayern v Celtic – Robert Lewandowski

Despite the obvious temptation to plump for ‘big’ Scottie Brown here, it’s probably a little bit more sensible to go instead for one of the world’s best and most consistent strikers.

As a result, the name on our lips is Robert Lewandowski. The clinical, physical Pole is capable of tearing Celtic apart, and may well do so on Wednesday.

Chelsea v Roma – Eden Hazard

The Belgian genius is still feeling his way back into regular football after a spell on the sidelines, but has looked as lethal as ever upon his return. Roma’s style could well result in increased space in which Hazard can operate, and he’s likely to be Chelsea’s most dangerous player.

You won’t be going far wrong backing one of the continent’s best attackers to score first in this one.
