It was a bad night for the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s football team on Tuesday as they fell to a 7-0 defeat against Premiership side Cliftonville in the League Cup.
While they were always expected to lose, the last thing the PSNI side needed was to make life even easier for their higher ranked opponents. However, they did just that in spectacular fashion last night.
Already trailing 4-0 after just 29 minutes, the PSNI’s captain Scott McCrory chased the ball into the left corner under very little pressure.
Faced with the choice of a simple back-pass or hoofing it into the stand, McCrory decided to go with a rather bizarre option ‘C’. The centre half then proceeded to chip his own keeper for one of the wildest own goals you are ever likely to see, much to the amusement of the home crowd at Solitude.
The hilarity wasn’t finished there, as the PA announcer decided to mock the hapless policemen even further by playing the theme from the popular 60s and 70s TV detective show Hawaii Five-0 after the own goal.
Maybe McCrory should be arrested for this one (sorry), you can watch the blunder for yourself below:
