Ox trolled by fans as Nathaniel Clyne omitted from Liverpool’s Champions League squad

The former Arsenal player claimed he wanted to play centre-midfield at Liverpool...

Today, squads for the early stages of the Champions League were announced, and there were a few significant omissions among the English sides. Vincent Janssen and Erik Lamela were left out by Tottenham, while Diego Costa failed to make the cut for Chelsea.

Liverpool fans, meanwhile, were disappointed to discover that right-back Nathaniel Clyne was not part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad. The English fullback has been suffering with injury, but his omission will have surprised some supporters, who are now fearing he faces a much longer spell on the sidelines than expected.

One man who may be more upset than most is the Reds’ new signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Ox ostensibly joined the club in order to play in his preferred position of central midfield, as opposed to the right wing-back berth he’d been occupying at Arsenal.

But now, with Clyne out and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jon Flanagan the only genuine right-backs in the squad, it looks as if Oxlade-Chamberlain may end up serving on the right of defence rather more than he’d expected. And some of the more keen-eyed Tweeps weren’t slow in pointing that out.
