Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini was the victim of terrible injustice early in today’s EFL Cup final and here at Paddy Power we’re not going to stand for it.
Despite clearly being onside, the Italian’s perfectly good opener in the 11th minute was somehow flagged offside by the assistant referee, much to the annoyance of the Southampton players and more importantly our punters!
Of course, almost inevitably Manchester United would net the opener themselves eight minutes later as talismanic striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic belted in a free kick from 25 yards – never fear, we’re still paying out on him too.
Not to worry though, because if you backed Gabbiadini to score first we’re going to refund your stake as a free bet. This refund applies to single bets only for first goalscorer bets only.
Jesse Lingard doubled United’s lead after 39 minutes and that only served to anger Gabbiadini further as he hit back with a quick-fire double with strikes just before and right after half-time.
The star striker was whipped off to a huge ovation and replaced by the equally beautiful Shane Long with seven minutes to go. That meant Gabbiadini was denied the chance to compete the hat-trick he should have already had.
That didn’t sit right with us either, so we’ve also decided to refund those customers who backed Gabbiadini to net a hat-trick their stakes as well, as a free bet. As before, this is on single bets only.
Unfortunately for the Saints their blessings well and truly ran out once Gabbiadini left the field as Ibrahimovic planted a header in the 87th minute to claim the EFL Cup for the Red Devils with a 3-2 victory.
