Watch: Reckless tackle sparks wild scenes as League of Ireland kicks off

A former Aston Villa man got himself into a lot of trouble last night

The SSE Airtricity League got underway in Ireland last night with a bang as Champions Dundalk met traditional powerhouse Shamrock Rovers last night.

A fairy tale run in the Europa League last season, Dundalk were back to business domestically, hunting a fourth title on the spin as the League of Ireland’s 2017 season got underway.

The Hoops for their part also competed in the Europa League in the 2011 season and are looking to get back on track after a few disappointing campaigns. Last night was always going to be fiery, in a game between two of the bigger clubs in Ireland and so it proved.

Having just scored to bring Rovers back into the game at 2-1 three minutes earlier, former Aston Villa striker Graham Burke lit the blue touch paper on the contest with an outrageously late tackle on Dundalk’s James McGrath in the 79th minute.

The tackle sparked a wild shoving match between the players and of course Burke saw red for it. You can see the incident for yourself below:
