Sunderland slashed for relegation after signing Joleon Lescott

Sunderland are now heavy favourites for the drop!

Sunderland fans haven’t had much to be cheerful about this season, they had to wait until November for their first Premier League win and have only managed three more wins since then. Today’s transfer news probably hasn’t done much to lift spirits.

Jermaine Defoe has managed 12 goals this term and you’d have to wonder what kind of doom they would be in without him. Victor Anichebe is the next best on three goals. However, David Moyes’ teams main failing this season has been at the back. Papy Djilobodji was brought in during the summer to sure things up defensively but has looked far from solid since his arrival.

But with 16 games to go, and the threat of relegation looking more and more likely, Moyes had to do something to arrest the ominous slide towards the Championship.

So what did he do? Maybe buy another top class striker to join Defoe? Or get a centre mid to provide more steel in middle of the park? Nope. He’s signed Joleon Lescott on a free for a few months.
