Pep Guardiola: Manchester City are a ‘small team’ and not a ‘top side’ claims his friend and co-author

The journalist also claims City are not as big a team as Manchester United or Chelsea

Comments

What a start to 2017 Pep Guardiola has had. First, his side looked woeful at Anfield on New Year’s Eve, losing 1-0. Then, he had to encourage City fans to cheer their team on against Burnley. Despite The Blues finishing the game with a 2-1 win, he produced one of the most awkward post-match interviews ever.

Now, his friend and renowned Spanish journalist Lu Martin has grassed him up on radio station Cadena Ser.

He said: “At the moment his challenge is Manchester City, who are a team like Villarreal in La Liga, for example, a team which is not one of the top sides. I am not giving my opinion, I am telling you what Guardiola thinks, they are like a second-tier team in the Premier League,”

“It is 30 years since Man City have won at Liverpool, for example. He sees it as a personal challenge, to compete against the biggest teams.

“In Spain and in Germany he was competing with a big team — but in England the big teams are Chelsea, Manchester United, other teams. He has a team which is powerful but not the most powerful.” The full quotes are available here.

City are currently 10 points behind Chelsea who sit in the top spot. They visit West Ham in the FA Cup on Friday, followed by Everton in the league on the 15th.

It is possible that Pep is currently pulping any copies of their book ‘La meva gent, el meu futbol’ as he prepares for press backlash on these comments, after claiming he is already ‘approaching the end of his career’ this weekend.
