Hotshot Jackpot Villain of the Week: Jermain Defoe lets down over half of players on their way to £250k

The Sunderland defender let down thousands of punters on their road to £250,000...

David Moyes’ side took three key points this weekend after beating Watford 1-0. But who was the goalscorer? Surely it was Jermain Defoe?

No. This time it was Dutch left-back Patrick van Aanholt who stuck the ball in the net. Now, we aren’t blaming him, but Defoe’s failure to get a goal let down thousands of our Jackpot punters en route to a quarter-of-a-million pounds.

As Sunderland’s top goalscorer, he is currently on eight Premier League goals this season. The same amount as Eden Hazard, Sadio Mane and more than Harry Kane and Charlie Austin. It’s easy to see why customers put their faith in him, especially considering Watford had conceded seven goals in their previous two games, and six in one game against Liverpool last month.

Van Aanholt’s goal, which came at the 49-minute mark, was thanks to a low Defoe cross. But tell that to over half of our Hotshot punters who backed him to do the scoring himself.

The 34-year-old striker also had a shot himself, as Sunderland surged forward after their goal. Less than ten minutes after, he cut inside and slammed the ball over the bar. Leaving our lads swearing their guts out.

The slender win has taken The Black Cats one point and one place off safety. They are now two ahead of Swansea and one behind Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace.

Hotshot Jackpot Round 16 Stats:

  • Just 126 players correctly predicted that Van Aanholt would get a goal against Watford, which was his third of the season. His last goal before that was in September against West Brom.
  • Zlatan Ibrahimovic proved to be a very popular Jackpot selection this week, which paid off as the Swedish striker scored two against West Brom. His first goal came after just five minutes.
  • Alexis Sanchez also upset over half of our prize-chasers, as he failed to find the net against Manchester City. He worked his arse off for most of the game, and looked a little bit fed up of it all by the end. Probably missed his dogs.
  • Mark Noble also proved to be a shrewd selection, with just 616 backing him to do the business. It is the second game in a row where he has found the net to give The Hammers a victory.
