Paddy offers 2/5 for the World Cup to be Gareth Southgate’s last in charge

The new England boss is a heavy favourite to fall at his first major tournament hurdle

So Gareth Southgate has beaten off all that stiff competition for the England job – but we’re is already offering odds on how long he’ll last in the role.

Southgate has agreed a four-year deal with the FA reportedly worth £2m-a-year after two wins and two draws as interim boss.

That record at least trumps previous manager Sam Allardyce – who’s role as Three Lions boss lasted just 67 days.

Success for recent England managers has been thin on the ground after the Three Lions dismal performance at Euro 2016 and Roy Hodgson’s subsequent resignation, followed by the Big Sam scandal.

And we’re cautious that Southgate will survive his first major tournament as boss, offering odds of 2/5 for the 2018 World Cup to be the end of the road for the former U21 manager.

The Three Lions are 33/1 to win 2018 World Cup, if you really fancy it.

Asked about Southgate appointment spokesman Paddy Power said: “I’ve got an opened jar of Pesto in the fridge that last longer than Allardyce, but Southgate seems like a squeaky-clean chap who’ll give it his best shot.

“It’s a shame the odds don’t reflect that though, and we’re a very short 2/5 that Russia will be the end of the road for Southgate.”

Which will be Southgate’s last tournament in charge of England?

2/5         2018 World Cup
4/1         Euro 2020
8/1         2022 World Cup
16/1       None
25/1       Longer
