It’s safe to say that Paul Scholes was not a happy man after United’s game against Fenerbahce on Thursday night in the Europa League. They went down within 65 seconds thanks to an overhead kick from Moussa Sow, and the misery started from there.
Sunderland reject Jermaine Lens found the net with a brilliant free-kick in the second half, and the Red Devils were sunk. Wayne Rooney got a 25-yard consolation goal late on, but the damage was already done.
After the game, former United man Scholes, with 499 appearances for the club, expressed his dismay at the state of play at the club at the moment, describing the past three years as “painful”.
Speaking on BT Sport, Scholes said: “Whether they can win the League Cup, whether they can win the FA Cup. Can they win this competition?
“It doesn’t look like it and they’ve shown in the last three years that they’re not capable of winning the league with this squad.”
This is Paul Scholes’ team sheet from tonight’s Man Utd game. Fascinating…what tells you he was getting slightly frustrated… pic.twitter.com/M2Qg1Et40O

BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey posted a picture of Paul Scholes’ teamsheet after the game, and it just about sums up his frustrations.
Yes, that does say “Rojo Big Worry” there and those question marks next to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s name sum up what just about every football fan was thinking about the missing midfielder.
Not to mention that big X through Jose Mourinho’s name…
