Hotshot Jackpot Villain of the Week: Harry Kane

The Tottenham striker carried the hopes of thousands of Hotshot Jackpot players, only to let them down at home to Crystal Palace

How a meek Harry Kane performance killed the dreams of 75 per cent of Hotshot players

Hotshot Jackpot Villain of the Week

The Hotshot Jackpot was a lovely tempting pot worth £275k at the weekend, and the majority of punters felt they had an easy banker in the Tottenham v Crystal Palace game courtesy of England striker Harry Kane.

After all, this is the man who has notched more than 20 goals in each of his last two seasons with Spurs, and who had two goals in his last three games against Crystal Palace. The White Hart Faithful have seen Kane score 19 times at home in the last two league campaigns, and the Paddy Power traders clearly felt another goal was likely at the weekend – pricing the Spurs striker up at 5/6 to find the onion bag at anytime.

Crystal Palace managed just eight clean sheets in total last season – and conceded in 17 of their 19 games on the road. The Eagles had also looked as entertaining as the last series of Mrs Brown’s Boys in their opening day defeat to West Brom.

All the signs pointed to a Tottenham win and a Harry Kane goal, and thus 75 per cent of Hotshot Jackpot players were banking on the striker to put them one step closer to £275k.

But it wasn’t to be. Whatever horrible things Roy Hodgson did to Kane over in France during Euro 2016 has continued to impact the frontman’s confidence as he failed to beat Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey. And for that crime, and for letting down so many Jackpot players, Kane is our Villain of the Week.

  • Philippe Coutinho was the only man to have more attempts on goal than Harry Kane this weekend. The Spurs striker tried his luck six times at White Hart Lane
  • Unfortunately for punters, only one of these shots actually tested out the Palace keeper, and that was a 25 yard effort straight down Hennessey’s throat
  • Victor Wanyama was playing as a defensive midfielder, and not only did he break the deadlock against Palace, he had four touches in the opposition box compared to Kane’s three
  • Part of the problem may have been Manuel Pochettino’s decision to drop Kane into a deeper No. 10 role, and playing new signing Vincent Janssen up top. While Poch claimed that Kane had more freedom against Palace, as well as showing off his astute play-making skills, it might have gone some way to hampering Jackpot players

What it does mean is that this week’s Jackpot goes up to a whopping £300k. Simply pick eight goalscorers in the eight different games and you could be collecting this monster prize on Sunday afternoon.
