While the majority of European football starts to slowly kick back into action, huffing and puffing into pre-season training, things are really heating up over in the Americas. On Thursday night into Friday morning we’ve got a couple of MLS games and a Brazilian Cup match to take in.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Closer to home, England’s women’s team fine-tune their Euro 2022 preparations with a friendly against their Swiss counterparts and that game kicks us off Thursday evening. It all adds up to a fine four fold so let’s take a look.

5pm Thursday: Switzerland v England – England (-1)

TV: ITV4 and ITV Hub

England’s Lionesses head to Zurich to take on Switzerland in their final Euro 2022 warm up match in fine fettle. They’ve won their two previous pre-tournament friendlies in convincing style, especially so against The Netherlands who are fancied to go far.

They first beat Belgium 3-0 before coming from behind to crush the Dutch 5-1. Switzerland, on the other hand, were battered 7-0 by Germany in their sole friendly so far and are without a win in five games.

This should be light work for the Lionesses who have failed to win just twice in their last 13 matches, going unbeaten in that impressive run.

I think we can expect England to pass the (-1) handicap. This has clicked in their last five, a spell of games where they’ve scored 26 goals and conceded just two.

11pm Thursday: America v Botafogo – BTTS No & Under 2.5 Goals

America Mineiro take on Botafogo in a Brazilian Cup last 16 first leg clash here with just three points separating the two in the Brazilian Serie A after 14 games. It’s pretty tight in the bottom half with America in 17th and Botafogo up in 10th.

There’s not much to write home about in terms of recent form with these two. In their respective last five games there’s been just two victories, both coming for Botafogo.

They’ve lost the other three while America have lost four and drawn one, a 0-0 at home against Fluminense.

These two are clearly lacking in confidence and goals are at a huge premium. In fact, America haven’t netted in any of their last five Serie A games. Botafogo are a tad more prolific with four in their last five, though three of them did come in one match. All things being equal, Both Teams to Score? No and Under 2.5 Goals looks to have a great chance.

12am Friday: Charlotte v Austin – Charlotte to Win

TV: Premier Sports 2

To MLS where Austin, 3rd in the Western Conference, make the trip to North Carolina to face Charlotte who are 9th in the East. In real terms this is the 4th best side in the US of A against the 18th – but that only tells half the story.

Home advantage is huge in MLS, given the eye-watering distances between clubs, and it’s at it’s most stark with Charlotte. Of their 20 points earned this season 18 of those have come on home soil. They’ve got the 4th best home record in the division and the joint-worst away.

Austin are not bad on the road (13 points from eight games, the 6th best in MLS) but that home record for Charlotte is unavoidable.

They’ve won six and lost two in front of their own supporters and I’m backing them to make that record even better with a Charlotte Win.

1am Friday: New York Red Bulls v Atlanta – New York Win & BTTS

TV: FreeSports

Finally it’s all eyes on the Big Apple as New York Red Bulls host Atlanta United. On paper this looks like it should be a pretty straightforward victory for the Red Bulls as they’re 4th in the Eastern Conference and their visitors here are down in 10th.

However, this is the MLS’ 23rd best home side taking on the 22nd best away team so not all is as cut and dried as we might hope. RB are lethal on the road and have taken 16 points from nine games compared to 10 from eight in NYC.

Atlanta have claimed just four points on their raids outside of Georgia. However, New York have won their last two at home and are now five undefeated at Red Bull Arena with both sides netting in three of their last four.

Both of these score quite a few and, with Atlanta netting in all four of their most recent away games but taking just one point, I think there might be handsome value in New York Red Bulls to Win and Both Teams to Score.
