Now that Irish football is undergoing a cultural revolution at international level, it’s worth extending these moments of serenity to League of Ireland grassroots.

It might not be a popular take, but the top tier in Ireland is comfortably as entertaining as that League One club your mate down the road supports and whether you like it or not, it’ll save you a few quid as well.

I often make this comparison – and I’ll make it again. A return flight to Manchester, an overnight in a hotel and a match ticket to Old Trafford will cost you roughly 300 quid.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

Do you know what you get that for that domestically? A season ticket to Shamrock Rovers and a bag of chips to celebrate. It also gives you a social outlet on Friday evenings and keeps you off Tinder. These are lessons I learned far, far too late in life.

But better late than never. Now, let’s discuss winning a few quid shall we? I’ll actually be at a game this weekend, so we can share the joys and sorrows on-site.

7:45pm: Bohemians v Shelbourne – Shels and the Draw

For all that Damien Duff is now the second coming, the hype needs to relax. Shels still won’t be knocking off the bigger sides because they’re reliant on fitness levels and enthusiasm within a very young squad.

But in games where they’re facing up to similar sides – and Bohs’ lack of experience is clearly at the core of their issues – they generally bamboozle them.

This could be one of those occasions and given Bohs are a week out from their clash with Rovers, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a split focus.

7:45pm: Dundalk v Shamrock Rovers – Rovers to Win

I can appreciate that Dundalk have improved significantly under Stephen O’Donnell this year, but it needs to be within context.

They’re still a considerable way off the standard set by the Hoops and the only reason they’re as fancied as they are in these games is because of their legacy.

Rovers can make ten changes and still be favourites for any tie in the country. Dundalk? Not so much. And for all that Rovers risked poor performances intermittently by doing it at half-speed, that stumble against Drogheda was exactly what they needed.

7:45pm: Derry v Drogheda – Both Teams to Score

My only steadfast rule for betting in this league is to never back anyone to beat Drogheda. That might sound naïve given they’re projected to finish bottom half, but they’re frequently getting big results against better teams in Ireland.

If this game was in Drogheda, I’d absolutely back them to get a point but given Derry do have home advantage, it’s probably a bit wiser to take them to net instead.

7:45pm: St Pats v UCD – Both Teams to Score

Pat’s are infuriating because it feels like their primary issue has been the same for the last five years.

They have the players. They have the manager. They have the identity – but not always the intensity, and the need to go between the gears is often painstaking to watch.

In UCD’s last five games, they’ve gotten points off Sligo and Dundalk, as well as beaten Finn Harps. I’d take them to score here.
