Scotland and Ukraine are finally able to play their World Cup qualifier after the game was delayed by two months.

Because of that, it is a long time since either have played a competitive game of football, with Scotland last beating an under-strength Denmark at Hampden Park and Ukraine beating Bosnia and Herzegovina to secure their passage to the play-offs.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

In a fairy-tale world, Ukraine would overcome Scotland and Wales and qualify for their first World Cup since 2006 but things might not be straightforward for the men in yellow, particularly after having struggled for wins in their qualifying group.

They did not win any of their first six games before coming to life with back-to-back away wins over Finland and Bosnia to secure their place in the play-offs.

Steve Clarke’s Scotland, meanwhile, have the advantage of playing on home soil due to their higher group stage points tally and they’ll be hoping to feed off a no-doubt raucous Hampden crowd.

A clash with Wales on Sunday awaits the winner as both sides look to take one step closer to Qatar. This is our Bet Builder for Scotland v Ukraine. Let’s get going!

Wednesday 7.45pm: Scotland v Ukraine
2022 World Cup Qualifying play-off
TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football

Result: Draw

Ukraine were the draw specialists of last year’s qualifiers, going unbeaten in their qualifying group but winning just two of their eight games.

They bizarrely managed two stalemates against world champions France but also could only take a point off bottom seeds Kazakhstan in both games.

Scotland, on the other hand, picked up an impressive 23 points out of 30 in a group containing Denmark, Austria, and Israel. The Scots drew their first two games in qualifying before finishing with a hugely impressive run of six victories on the bounce.

Ukraine proved a tough nut to crack in qualifying and could do so again on Wednesday.

Both teams to score

Ukraine scored in every qualifying group game last year but managed just one clean sheet out of eight. Scotland, meanwhile, scored in every match, save for a 2-0 defeat to runaway group leaders Denmark.

The Scots conceded in virtually every important group game they played, with the exception of a 1-0 win in Austria and a 2-0 win over Denmark when the Danes had already secured passage to the World Cup. It would be surprising if Wednesday’s game remained low-scoring.

Lyndon Dykes to score anytime

Lyndon Dykes’ goals proved crucial in Scotland making their first World Cup play-offs in 24 years. The QPR striker earned eight points with his four goals in qualifying, scoring in one-goal wins over Austria, Israel, Moldova, and the Faroe Islands.

Dykes enjoyed a moderately successful campaign with QPR, scoring nine goals in 33 league appearances.

However, he has not scored in his last ten appearances for club and country and could do with rediscovering his goalscoring touch.

Dykes was vital in securing Scotland a place in the play-offs, and they could again be the difference in sending them through to a date with Wales at the weekend.

Roman Yaremchuk to score anytime

Like Dykes, Roman Yaremchuk popped up with key contributions in Ukraine’s qualifying campaign, earning four points with his three group goals. The Benfica forward finished as Ukraine’s top scorer in qualifying and is by far the most likely player to get them on the scoresheet on Wednesday.

He enjoyed a modest return of six goals in 13 league starts for Benfica this season, also notching three goals in six starts in the Champions League during their run to the last-eight and he should cause problems for the Scottish defence here.
