With domestic footy done for the year, attention turns to the ever-confusing UEFA Nations League. We’ll be focusing on Northern Ireland v Greece on Thursday night here, and we’ve picked out three bets worth looking at. Enjoy!
It’s hard to see there being goals in this one. Northern Ireland usually struggle to score goals and they’re fairly solid defensively, unless they come up against a really exceptional front line – and Greece don’t offer that. Ian Baraclough’s men haven’t conceded more than two goals since September 2020 so expect minimal chances, and excitement, on Thursday.
As for Greece, seven of their last eight games has seen Under 2.5 Goals land. They’ve got Celtic’s Giorgos Giakoumakis up top, however, they’re not a major goal threat. They’ve scored twice in their last four games, which includes them netting once against Kosovo and Montenegro. Under 2.5 Goals is our big fancy here.
We’ve spoken about how we’re expecting under three goals but if anyone’s going to score first, it could be Greece’s Vangelis Pavlidis. The 23-year-old was on fire at AZ Alkmaar this season, with the forward netting 23 goals in all competitions.
He’ll be up against the Leicester veteran Jonny Evans, who isn’t blessed with pace, and Pavlidis can cause he and the Northern Ireland defence a few problems. Instead of backing him to score anytime, with a low-scoring game expected we’re getting behind Pavlidis to Score First.
We’ve got two relatively solid sides who don’t give up many chances. However, they also struggle to score goals. A big factor in this fixture is most of the players are coming into it on the back of a gruelling season. You can guarantee that a few of them are already on the beach.
We like the look of it to finish 1-1, maybe even with two scrappy set-piece goals.
