With Stephen Kenny being the beacon of light that Irish football has needed now for the bones of three decades, it’s not only at an international level where his impact is being seen.

His previous with the League of Ireland is well-established, but his openness to bringing players up from the league has now gotten more bystanders engaged with the ongoings in Ireland’s domestic offerings.

As an advocate for this league for many years, I can tell you right now that there is nothing quite like stinking of six-packs of supermarket-bought lager because the fella behind you had a rough week in work and is taking out on the opposition left-back in frustration.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

Or there is no grander experience than stinking of four-quid chips that barely pass a safety inspection, nor the feeling of entitlement to scream at total strangers for not doing their job according to the brief you’ve absolutely never heard.

So, this is my plea for you to go along and embrace the rugged, hands-on experience that comes with this undertaking. Let’s get to it.

7:45pm: Bohemians v Drogheda – Drogheda and the Draw

Keith Long said himself during the week that the inconsistencies within the their squad are primarily down to the youthful nature of his team and that, when the next window opens, they’ll be investing in dressing room assets.

I just think they’re a bit s****.

Drogheda have just gone and beaten Rovers and if you don’t like the price about a team coming off that result away from home to a side of similar ability, I don’t know what to tell you.

7:45pm: Derry City v Finn Harps – Derry City to Win

Harps haven’t won any of their last four and while they’ve typically raised their game for this fixture, this might be the best Candystripes outfit to line out in the Premier Division in an age.

Derry beat them earlier on in the season and that felt like a moment of deliverance, having taken just seven points from a possible 21 in their meetings prior to this.

7:45pm: Dundalk v St. Pat’s – Dundalk to Win

This is both the best and most difficult fixture to call this weekend. While this is essentially the Stephen O’Donnell derby – for those unwashed: O’Donnell left Pat’s this season to join Dundalk despite the Saints winning the FAI Cup – it’s also a meeting of two sides who have gone in opposite directions.

Pat’s are every bit as inconsistent as Bohs, but they’ve won games due to raw talent. Dundalk have made steady improvements but weren’t expected to be serious contenders to Rovers or even Derry.

Yet here we are – and I can’t help but think that the home advantage swings me in the Lilywhites’ direction.

7:45pm: UCD v Sligo Rovers – Sligo Rovers to Win

In what was a weird dismissal of Liam Buckley during the week, perhaps an even weirder moment was the fallout after where players openly said they didn’t do enough for him. That’s rare and resembles a situation where the squad know they’ve not been good enough.

More than enough to beat the worst side in the division, then.

8pm: Shamrock Rovers v Shelbourne – Shamrock Rovers to Win

For all that I believe Shels are on a run, I wasn’t even sure pre-season would drop points in consecutive games all year and I’m going to commit to that until such a time where I look completely stupid.

Perhaps Tolka Park would limit their expansive style of play, but the Hoops at Tallaght should be too much for Damien Duff’s charges.
