We’re down to the part of the season when league football essentially becomes knockout football, and the whole complexion of the campaign can change in an instant.

Halifax Town host Chesterfield in the second of the Vanarama National League play-off eliminator matches on Tuesday, with the winner to face Solihull Moors in the semi-final. The home side will perhaps be rueing a missed opportunity, having only narrowly missed out on third place and an automatic semi-final berth.

NEW TO PADDY POWER NEWS?

They’ll be looking to put that disappointment behind them against a Chesterfield side who have been struggling for form of late and struggling for goals. A semi-final spot is up for grabs for one of these sides, with the tantalising prospect of a return to the Football League almost in sight.

And here’s our four-leg Bet Builder for Tuesday’s clash…

FC Halifax Town v Chesterfield
Tuesday, May 24: 7.45pm
BT Sport 1

Halifax to win

Halifax come into this clash in the better form of the two sides. They won three of their final six league fixtures, drawing one and losing two. And while that’s not the kind of form you’d normally write home home about, Chesterfield’s is comparatively miserable.

The Spireites won just one of their last six, losing four and drawing one while their away form will do little to fill them with confidence. They’ve won just one of their last nine on their travels, losing four and drawing four.

Given that the hosts are unbeaten in 10 at home, winning eight of those, the smart money is definitely on the Shaymen to progress here. We’re backing Halifax to win

Under 2.5 goals

Goals could be a rare commodity in this one. Halifax have scored no more than one goal in four of their last six and also haven’t found the net more than twice in any of their last 10 home and away games.

They’re a stingy defensive unit, too. At home, they’ve kept a clean sheet in seven of their last 10 matches, conceding just three goals in that time but they also haven’t scored more than two in any of those 10. It’s numbers like those which explain why they have the best defensive record in the league this season but also why they’ve scored substantially less than any of the other top eight sides.

With Chesterfield having drawn a blank in four of their last six matches, this one could be settled by just a solitary goal. Under 2.5 goals is grabbing our attention here.

A goal to be scored in both halves? No

Halifax have been relatively slow starters of late, having scored a first half goal in just three of their last 10 home and away matches and the same number goes for their just their home form as well.

In fact, they’ve scored only nine first half goals at home all season, the fourth worst in the division. The only teams with a poorer record all finished in the bottom six. Added to that Chesterfield’s struggles in front of goal recently and the fact that Halifax have conceded only three first half goals at home all season and we’re expecting a cagey opening 45 minutes.

When the two sides met just over a month ago, Halifax ran out 2-0 victors with the deadlock not being broken until the 76th minute. We’re expecting a similar pattern here and are going with A Goal to be Scored in Both Halves? No.

Matt Warburton to score anytime

Matt Warburton has been one of Halifax’s standout performers this season, contributing 13 goals from midfield. He’s also found an upturn in form slightly as the season has drawn to a close, netting four in his last eight appearances after a run of just one goal in his eight prior to that.

While Billy Waters started the season at a blistering pace, netting in eight of his first 10, his form has drastically dropped off. He’s still Halifax’s top scorer with a very respectable 18 league strikes but he’s found the net in only one of his last 12 games, and, going back further, in just four of his last 27 in the league.

With Waters currently on a nine game barren streak, Warburton could be the man to guide the Shaymen one step closer to the Football League. We’re going with Matt Warburton to score anytime
