The newly crowned FA Cup winners aren’t able to celebrate their success for too long as it’s straight back to league action for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
Southampton come into the game with ten days of rest, following their 3-0 loss away to Brentford last time out. Their form has somewhat stalled in the last couple of months, picking up five points in their last ten matches.
Liverpool on the other hand have played a full 120 minutes only on Saturday, and know that the Premier League title, and a domestic treble, is looking unlikely. They may look to focus instead on the Champions League final.
A man that knows all about winning trophies with Liverpool is our very own Phil Thompson. We caught up with the Liverpool legend before their penalty shootout victory against Chelsea to give us his best bets for Tuesday night’s game away to Southampton. Here’s Phil’s verdict…
Tuesday 7.45pm: Southampton v Liverpool TV: Sky Sports Main Event & Sky Sports Premier League
THOMMO: It’ll be a big game following the FA Cup final. But what’s happened to Southampton!? I think Ralph Hassenhuttl has done an absolutely fantastic job, but he is under pressure from the fans. They’ve picked up just one point from their last four Premier League games, and they got lost to Brentford 3-0 last time out. They’ve won only one of their last ten Premier League games. And – get this – they’ve lost the most points in the league from winning positions, and that’s 26 points. So even if they were to go ahead, you might not feel safe with this Southampton team.
Liverpool have scored 142 goals in all competitions this season, they’ve won 46 out of 59 games. So I do think whatever team Liverpool will put out, I think it will be too much for the Saints at the moment. But just like Aston Villa – they turned up against Liverpool and gave them a hell of a game, maybe Southampton could just do that.
But I do see Liverpool winning this, and I don’t think Southampton to score, so I’m going for a Liverpool win to nil.
For a goalscorer, if he recovers after going off in the cup final over the weekend, I fancy Mo Salah to bag a goal. As we’ve seen Son getting right behind Salah in the Golden Boot race, I think Salah will be desperate to score. He’ll probably be most people’s best bet, but I’m going with Mo Salah to score at anytime.
