There’s some cracking games coming up on Monday night, starting in Italy, where it’s 4th vs 5th as Lazio travel to Juventus, who are already sure of their Champions League place for next season. It will be veteran defender Giorgio Chiellini’s final game for the Old Lady at the Juventus Stadium.
In England, we’re off to the cut and thrust of the Championship Play-Offs as Huddersfield and Luton eye a spot in the final. They couldn’t be separated on Friday night with a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road.
Finally, it’s the Premier League clash between Newcastle and Arsenal, with the visitors looking to get back on track after their poor display in the North London Derby on Thursday. Champions League qualification is still in the hands of The Gunners, but they can scarcely afford to drop any more points.
We’ve been through the form book and picked out our best bets from these three clashes to wrap into a neat little treble of Monday night footie action. Let’s have a look.
Whilst Juventus have Champions League qualification secured, Lazio are still battling for a Europa League spot – but are in prime position to do so, albeit with this tricky test in store. The visitors are the second highest scorers in the league this season, with 72 goals, and can take heart from the fact that Juve have failed to keep a clean sheet since 20th March, having kept just two in their last 12 games.
At the Juventus Stadium, Massimiliano Allegri’s side have only drawn a blank twice this season, and in their last five league games, both teams have scored. It’s also happened in four of Lazio’s past five games, so the selections here is both teams to score, though the match itself is too close to call.
Huddersfield are unbeaten against Luton this season. They’ve drawn away at Kenilworth Road in the league and in the first leg of the play offs, and beat them at the John Smith’s Stadium 2-0 in April. With a place at Wembley at stake for a Premier League return, it’s difficult to see Nathan Jones’ Hatters overturning their hoodoo this season. The Terriers were on top for large swathes of the second half of the first leg on Friday night and will look to pick up from where they left off.
Often the play-offs are about momentum, and whilst the Terriers came into the Play-Offs unbeaten in seven – with six wins – Luton’s form was more stuttering, and included the 7-0 humbling away to Fulham in April. We think Huddersfield will make it to Wembley, and won’t need extra time or pens to do so.
Monday 8pm, Sky Sports Main Event & Sky Sports Premier League
St James’ Park has been a difficult place to visit in the second half of this season. Their last home defeat to Liverpool was preceded by six straight wins, but the Magpies have struggled against the top six this season, with their home draw with Man United representing their only point from their 11 games against the division’s best sides.
Although this is a very different team to the side that lost 2-0 to the Gunners at The Emirates in November, we can’t see their fortunes reversing too much. Add in to the mix that Arsenal are desperate for a positive response to their North London Derby humbling on Thursday night, and Mikel Arteta’s side should come out fired up – so the selection here is Arsenal to win.
For more value, we’re adding both teams to score. Arsenal’s 29 goals conceded on the road this season is the third-worst return in the Premier League’s top 12, but their 26 goals scored represents the fourth-best record.
On top of this, Newcastle have only failed to score once at home at the turn of year – last time out against Liverpool – so we can expect action at both ends here.
