Eintracht Frankfurt hold the advantage going into the second leg of their Europa League semi final against West Ham thanks to a 2-1 aggregate lead. The Hammers though have proven their metal in Europe already this season and have overturned bad first leg results against Sevilla and Lyon already and will be hopeful of getting to their first European final since 1976.

Thursday 8pm: Eintracht Frankfurt v West Ham United
TV: BT Sport 1

Both Teams To Score

Frankfurt come into the match in the better form of the pair, winning two of their last five in all competitions, drawing one and losing two, scoring seven and conceding nine. Their home form is worrying though, they’ve drawn four of their last five games, losing the other. West Ham have won just one of their last five fixtures, drawing one and losing all three of their most previous fixtures.

Looking at their away games, the Hammers’ form isn’t great with four losses and just one win over their last five in all competitions. They are, at least, in robust goal-scoring form, scoring six over their last five overall games and conceding six. With both teams in ripe goal-scoring form then we have to go with the obvious Both Teams to Score to get us started.

Declan Rice to be booked anytime

Declan Rice has been a beast in Europe this season and has turned a few heads across the continent with his performances, he’s going to be in for a tough night here though. Frankfurt on home ground with an eager crowd behind them know that an early goal could well finish off the tie and West Ham will have to dig deep to get back into it. Rice’s talent, of course, is finding the space in midfield to get the ball out to the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio. But he’s not afraid of the dark arts and he’s more than happy to make a tactical foul and bring a player down that gets past him if his defence is threatened.

The England midfielder has received eight yellow cards this season and picked up another two over his nine Europa League games so far this campaign. As we saw last week at the London Stadium, Frankfurt are keen to keep the ball on the floor and pass it through teams and with so much of the traffic going through Rice’s area of the field we make him one of the favourites to pick up a Yellow Card here.

Jarrod Bowen to Score or Assist

Like Rice, Bowen has been one of the highlights of West Ham’s European campaign. Surely his form means we’ll be seeing him in an England shirt over the summer as he’s netted 10 Premier League goals this season and has three over his eight Europa League appearances. He’s also got three over his last six starts for the Irons and came very, very close to levelling the match in the dying stages of the first leg.

One of the weaknesses we’ve seen in Eintracht’s way of playing this season is that they don’t always go with runners and set up to defend spaces rather than man-mark players. With a speed merchant like Bowen he really needs someone keeping an eye on him. Now we could back him to Score at Anytime here but we can exploit a different bet. He’ll be seeing loads of the ball on the night, providing crosses, through-balls and shooting when he has the chance so we’re backing him to Score or Assist.

Eintracht Frankfurt Double Chance

We’ll have to admit here that the romantic in us would like to see the Irons playing in a European final but when it comes to betting we need to keep a level head and be objective. The fact of the matter is that West Ham’s away form has been terrible of late, winning just one of their last eight away fixtures, losing six of them and drawing just one.

Frankfurt’s home form isn’t exactly wonderful too, as mentioned above, but their recent string of home draws shows that they’ve become a very difficult team to beat under the tutelage of Oliver Glasner. Matched this with their better goal stats, also mentioned earlier, and West Ham’s bad results on the road we’re going with Die Adler on the Double Chance market here.
