Chelsea approach this crucial quarter-final first leg off the back of a shock 4-1 defeat to Brentford in an eerily similar scenario to last season, when they lost 5-2 at home to West Brom just days before their 2-0 win over Porto in the last-eight. Real Madrid have also suffered a humiliating home defeat since they were drawn against Chelsea, going down 4-0 against Barcelona in one of the most one-sided El Clasico’s in recent memory.

They got back to winning ways at the weekend, beating Celta Vigo 2-1 to tighten their grip on the league trophy. However, they are nowhere near good to win the Champions League and only find themselves in the last-eight thanks to a customary PSG meltdown.

Chelsea to Win

Real Madrid were second best for a game-and-a-half of that Round of 16 tie and only came alive when Paris St-Germain handed them a lifeline, as only PSG could.

Chelsea cruised to victory against Madrid in last season’s semi-final second leg and should have too much again on Wednesday night.

Both Teams to Score? No

Chelsea’s Champions League success last season was built on the back of a solid defensive foundation. They conceded just two goals in seven knockout games en-route to winning the competition last season and are yet to concede a Champions League goal at Stamford Bridge since Thomas Tuchel was appointed in January 2021.

Real Madrid, on the other hand, showed absolutely no ambition in their 1-0 defeat to PSG in the first leg of their Last 16 clash and are unlikely to be any different on Wednesday night. Carlo Ancelotti is likely to employ a pragmatic approach to keep the tie alive ahead of the second leg at the Bernabeu next Tuesday and his side are unlikely to become the first team to score against Tuchel’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on a Champions League night.

Thomas Tuchel Chelsea

Kai Havertz to Score Anytime

Chelsea have struggled for a consistent this season, undermining their bid to mount a sustained title challenge. Record signing Romelu Lukaku has scored just 12 goals all season, with only five of them coming in the league, while Jorginho remains the club’s second highest goalscorer in the league with six goals from the penalty spot.

Kai Havertz, however, has emerged as a real goal threat in recent months.

The German has scored four goals in his last four league games, including the crucial 89th-minute winner against Newcastle to give Chelsea breathing room in the race for Europe. He also scored the winning goal to secure the club’s first-ever Club World Cup in addition to giving Chelsea the lead in the 2-0 win over Lille in the round-of-16 first leg at Stamford Bridge.

In all, Havertz has scored six goals in his last eight appearances in all competitions and is by far the most likely Chelsea player to score on Wednesday night.

Mason Mount Anytime Assist

Mason Mount has been one of Chelsea’s most creative players this season, registering an impressive nine assists in all competitions – more than anyone else at the club. Mount registered his first Champions League assist of the season in Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Lille last time out and is the most likely Chelsea player to set up a teammate on Wednesday, especially considering Reece James’s recent fitness problems.

Mount has registered four assists in his last five outings for the Blues and averages an impressive two key passes per game in the Champions League. The English midfielder scored in Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Madrid in last year’s semi-final but is more likely to turn creator on Wednesday.
