The only thing in the world that felt longer than that international break was the World Cup draw for Qatar 2022. But I am happy to report on two things – Ireland are now the global superpower that can’t even be denied by four disallowed goals in one game, and club football is back. Thank Christ.
With six weeks to go to tie up the season, there’s plenty still to play for. Spurs, Arsenal and Man United are going to have a fun tussle for fourth spot while Newcastle have probably bought themselves out of the drop.
But for them, and especially Eddie Howe, the next nine games will probably exhibit how much confidence their new owners will have in spending their millions. So while Newcastle have little to play for in terms of the actual table, their medium-term future is very much hanging in the balance.
As for Spurs – if they don’t spend, they’ll probably lose their manager. What a total inverse we have here. Thankfully, we’ll settle this on the pitch and hope that a return of Super Sundays doesn’t leave us high and dry like they have done so many times. At least there’s always a few quid to be made off it, so here’s a Bet Builder to sink your teeth into.
You could make the argument on the base of things that Spurs could have done without the break as they were getting consistent results in the league before everyone jetted off. You could simultaneously point out that Newcastle were in dire need of the break, having been defeated twice in succession after a huge run of results.
But actually Spurs were coming off an embarrassing defeat to Middlesbrough and shipped three to a toothless Manchester United, while Newcastle hadn’t conceded more than a goal in any of their last 11 league games. They may have contrasting results but their momentum and overall play were going in opposite directions. I fancy Spurs to Win in a big way here.
The international break was kind to Harry Kane. He only played in one of the games, scored and had a little trot around Wembley – a stadium that actually played home to him briefly.
While multiple other players had competitive games, or harder shifts, the talisman simply had extended break down the road so the travel won’t be affecting him here. Newcastle still possess major issues in central areas and Kane will have the time to turn and shoot. We’re getting a nice price on Kane to Score 2 or More Goals.
Newcastle are one of those sides that were beginning to find a defensive rhythm – something that Eddie Howe isn’t exactly known for – and because of this gap between games, I genuinely think they’ll revert to type now because the results aren’t coming for their more controlled passages of play.
That’s not to say I believe they’ll not look more menacing going forward – they will – but it should benefit the game as a spectacle. Over 3.5 Goals keeps us ticking along.
Spurs are good, but they’re exceptionally lax when they’re finding the net relatively easy. They lack any sort of professionalism with a lead and I think that will rear its ugly head again here. I don’t truly buy Newcastle as a team likely to convert their chances – as displayed just before the break – but I do expect them to have multiple as we get Bournemouth Ball back. Newcastle to Have Four or More Shots on Target rounds us off.
