Well, what a Wednesday night we have in store this week ladies and gentlemen. We’ve got Real Madrid v Paris St-Germain in the Champions League last 16 stages, Manchester City v Sporting and, just when you thought the games could come no bigger, Hartlepool v Rotherham in the EFL Trophy semi finals.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS

Football, eh? The beautiful mosaic that forms the footballing landscape is on full display this midweek and what else can we do other than just sit back and enjoy the view?

We’ll also take in the sights and sounds of Dens Park where there’s a Scottish Premiership relegation tussle between rock bottom Dundee and 9th-placed St Mirren. So, buckle up, it’s going to be a wild ride on route to your Wednesday night four fold football acca.

7.45pm: Hartlepool v Rotherham – Rotherham (-1)

TV: Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football

Mock the Papa John’s Trophy if you want. You might think I already did so in my intro, but no. Much like the Carabao Cup, if we’re honest, this competition nothing more than a major pain in the a**e for the clubs involved until we get to this exact stage. But now it comes to life.

A place at Wembley awaits the winner of this game and the last time we had a crowd in attendance for the final, 85,000 people flocked to north London to see Portsmouth beat Sunderland in a thrilling encounter. This is normally the first round where we get anything approaching full-strength teams.

Bad news for Hartlepool, then, as Rotherham sit four points clear at the top of League One, though Wigan in 2nd have two games in hand over them. The Monkey Hangers are 12th in League Two and will need to harness every ounce of home support they get here.

I don’t think it will be enough, though. The Millers are really, really good on the road and, while Hartlepool are decent at home, the away side should have too much for them. I think there’s great value in backing Rotherham (-1) in the handicap market here.

7.45pm: Dundee v St Mirren – BTTS? No & Under 2.5 goals

To the mighty Scottish Premiership next where it’s looking very bleak for Dundee. They host St Mirren on Wednesday knowing that they really need a win in this match which is their game in hand over everyone else at the bottom.

Dundee are nine points adrift of Aberdeen in 10th with three games to go until the split after this. St Mirren are one point ahead of The Dons themselves and might be targeting this as a must win.

Predictably, both are in awful form. The home side have won just one of their last 14 in the league and have lost nine in that time. However, they have drawn their last two and have shown signs of tightening up at the back.

The Buddies have lost their last three in the league after a good run but they’ve stopped scoring. I think Both Teams To Score? No & Under 2.5 Goals is the way to play here. Over their last six combined games in the Premiership these two have amassed just the one goal between them.

8pm: Manchester City v Sporting – Man City (-2)

TV: BT Sport 2 and BT Sport Ultimate

To the Champions League now where Manchester City hold a slender 5-0 lead from the away leg of their last 16 tie with Sporting. They are, unsurprisingly, massive favourites to win inside the 90 again here.

In their last 17 matches in all competitions they’ve failed to win just twice, against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton and Antonio Conte’s all-conquering Tottenham. Sporting have now won just two of their last six, drawing two and losing two.

It’s surely going to be a case of how many again for City who will be in high spirits after their 4-1 derby demolition of Manchester United at the weekend. I think, all things considered, Man City (-2) is a good bet.

It’s slightly bigger than Over 3.5 Goals and would have clicked in four of their last eight. The key here is, of course, that it easily landed in the first leg and we might well see a repeat at The Etihad.

8pm: Real Madrid v Paris St-Germain – Real to Qualify

TV: BT Sport 3

Paris St-Germain take a 1-0 lead to Real Madrid in the other Champions League match on Wednesday thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s brilliant solo goal right at the death three weeks ago. Real went to Paris looking to take the 0-0 and barely attempted to get out of their own half.

That can’t be the case here and hopefully we’re in for a far more entertaining spectacle. Real were struggling for goals heading into the first leg but they’ve since scored eight in their last three.

PSG are all over the shop and have lost two of their last three. There’s big question marks over Mbappe’s fitness and he might only be able enough to start on the bench.

Given the change in each side’s fortunes since the first leg I’m siding with Real Madrid to Qualify. It’s a great price and, given that the Parisians lost to Nice and Nantes in their last two away games, I think Real will get the job done at a much bigger price than simply for Real to Win inside the 90.
