Liverpool FC great turned Paddy Power ambassador Phil Thompson is back in the ring for another swing at this week’s Champions League knockout matches. In his sights here is Benfica v Ajax on Wednesday night.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
The Dutch side are big favourites with Paddy’s traders and they occupy their usual spot at the top of the Eredivisie. Benfica are some way off the top of the Portuguese top flight and Thommo thinks this one is likely to go to form. Settle in, here’s Thommo’s Benfica v Ajax tips.
Wednesday 8pm: Benfica v Ajax
TV: BT Sport 3
I’m going to go with the bookies in this one, I do fancy Ajax. You get a little bit confused, don’t you, with the Eredivisie. Ajax are all powerful, they don’t lose many games and they won at the weekend against Willem II.
They won 1-0, no surprise, but they had 31 shots at goal! Only five on target and 73% possession away from home shows how easy the Dutch league is. They’re top by five points from PSV Eindhoven. Even Sebastian Haller is having a teriffic season at Ajax!
Benfica, what do we make of them? They’re 3rd, 12 points behind Porto which is probably about right. They drew on Friday away from home against Boavista. I think Ajax will Win. A close call, 2-1 to Ajax and Sebastian Haller to Score Anytime.
