Newcastle have gone some way towards easing their relegation fears with three wins on the bounce, but that decent form will face arguably its biggest test so far at Champions League-chasing West Ham.

West Ham’s form in 2022 has been patchy at best, with David Moyes’ side most recently rescuing a point at struggling Leicester.

The Hammers have won three, drawn one, and lost two in 2022, while they were also unconvincing against non-league Kidderminster in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

That patchy run has seen West Ham drop out of the Champions League places, but they have the chance to momentarily reclaim their position in fourth if they can beat Newcastle.

West Ham to Win

Newcastle’s winning run has been hugely important, but it comes with a caveat, with all three victories coming against teams in the bottom half.

They have taken just three points against sides in the top 10 of the league this season, and just one against those teams when on the road.

With January signing Kieran Trippier missing out with a foot fracture, Newcastle have lost one of their most important assets and are unlikely to improve their record against the top half.

Both Teams to Score

West Ham’s stuttering run boils down to their inability to keep a clean sheet. Moyes’s side have kept two shoutout in their last nine league games, with their only defensive blanks against Norwich and Watford.

They have managed just two clean sheets in their last six home games in the league during a period that saw them concede 11 goals.

Newcastle, on the other hand, have kept two clean sheets in their last three games, but were ripped apart by Leeds on several occasions, while they were saved by Ollie Watkins’ toe being offside against Aston Villa at the weekend.

They have kept just three clean sheets in 23 games and boast the third-worst defensive record in the league.

However, they have also scored in each of their last five games and boast the best goalscoring record of the bottom four, so they should be able to cause problems for West Ham’s struggling defence.

Jarrod Bowen to score first

Jarrod Bowen has gone from strength to strength for West Ham this season, especially in recent months. He has now scored five goals in his last five league games and has scored seven in his last seven in all competitions.

His brilliant goalscoring form has seen him overtake Michail Antonio as West Ham’s top scorer in all competitions and draw level with him in the league. Three of Bowen’s last five league goals have come as the first goal in the game, while four of them have come as West Ham’s first goal.

He has emerged as West Ham’s most dangerous player and has consistently scored important goals in their quest for Europe. He can do so again against Newcastle on Saturday as West Ham aim to get their top four quest back on track.

Michail Antonio to score anytime

While Bowen’s goalscoring form has skyrocketed after a slow start to the season, Michail Antonio’s has gone in the opposite direction.

Antonio scored five goals in his first six league games of the season but has scored just three times in his past 17 league appearances.

However, his performances have been generally decent during the relative dry spell he has endured and has made ground on Bowen in West Ham’s assists chart.

Antonio averages more than two shots per game and is facing a Newcastle outfit that has faced an average of 15 shots per game in the league this season, the fourth-highest average in the league.

Antonio scored in the reverse fixture in St. James’ Park as West Ham secured an impressive 4-2 win on the opening day of the season and he can get his goalscoring form back on track against the same opponents on Saturday.
