This Friday night we’ve got some sparkling action under the Parisian lights as Ligue 1’s champions elect tackle a side with Champions League ambitions. It’s Paris St-Germain hosting Rennes in a match at might be a whole lot closer than you’d think on first look.

Rennes are 5th in Ligue 1 but have some work to do to catch Nice, who they trail by five points, in the final Champions League spot. It’s more straightforward for PSG who will just be looking to continue racking up the points so they can throw everything in to their Champions League campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are a handy 13 points clear at the top of the table and he might as well get those ‘Champions 2021/22’ t-shirts printed now. This could be one of PSG’s tougher matches between now and their crowning as Rennes are pretty stubborn.

They don’t pick up many points away from home, though, but can they rally and improve on their recent form in the face of adversity? Let’s take a look through the interpretive medium of a Bet Builder.

PSG to Win by Exactly 1 Goal

PSG have really turned it on in Ligue 1 recently, winning their last three games while scoring 11 goals and conceding one. They have failed to win on just six occasions in the French top flight this season and have won a whopping 17 games this term.

Rennes have won 11, drawn four and lost eight. They’ve taken just 12 points from 11 away games this season though. Their recent form is poor and in their last six they’ve lost four times, winning twice – both at home.

It should be another home win here but there’s an interesting trend we might be able to capitalise on. In all five of their most recent losses, Rennes have been defeated by a one-goal margin.

Rennes have only conceded two goals more than the champions elect and I think they’ll put up a stubborn resistance here. I’m hoping their line of form continues and that PSG win by exactly 1 Goal to kick us off in smug style.

Over 2.5 Goals

I think Rennes might score as well. On top of their handy defence they’ve got a pretty effective strike force which has the 3rd-most goals in Ligue 1 and just eight fewer than Kylian Mbappe, Neymar, Lionel Messi and Co.

They’ve scored in all but one of their last 17 Ligue 1 games, including a 2-0 home win over PSG earlier this season. But, and I can’t emphasise this strongly enough, they’re not the same beast on the road so I don’t anticipate a repeat of that result.

Overs has landed surprisingly sparingly for PSG, just twice in their last five, but it has come off in both of their most recent league matches. Rennes have seen Overs click in six of their last eight so I fancy our chances here.

Martin Terrier to Score Anytime

In a game that’s throwing up quite a lot of surprising numbers, here’s a few more for you. Rennes have two players on the same number of goals as PSG’s top scorer, Kylian Mbappe.

Those two men are Gaetan Laborde and Martin Terrier who both have 11 league goals, just like Mbappe, with the trio tied for 3rd in the Ligue 1 top scorer charts. In a toss up between our two Rennes players, I’m siding with Martin Terrier to Score Anytime.

He’s in the slightly better recent-scoring form than his team mate and has one more away goal than Laborde as well. While both scored last time out, Terrier has six in his last seven and gets the nod here.

Under 10.5 Corners

While there could be a few goals, neither of these two regularly rack up loads of corners. Under 10.5 corners has landed in Rennes’ last three Ligue 1 games and the match before that they had just one of their own. They don’t normally give up too many, either.

For PSG it’s clicking around 50% of the time recently and it’s either feast or famine with them. They’ve varied from having just three last time out in a 5-1 rout to notching 14 alone in the game before. Given how good Rennes are at the back, while acknowledging that they’re likely to be under the cosh, I think we’ll back their defence to keep PSG at bay and Under 10.5 Corners here.
