Manchester United and Burnley both returned incredibly predictable results over the weekend, with Burnley’s drab 0-0 draw against Watford set in stone since the beginning of time and Manchester United’s penalty shootout defeat to Middlesbrough pretty much sealed as soon as Bruno Fernandes failed to convert with the goal gaping.

In fairness to United, Friday’s shock FA Cup exit was one of their best performances under Ralf Rangnick and they would have strolled to a comfortable win on virtually any other day.

They now have a chance to make amends for that result and strengthen their hold on fourth place with a trip to struggling Burnley.

Tuesday’s trip to Turf Moor is the first of a five-game run of winnable fixtures and it is imperative that United secure three points.

Man Utd to Win

Burnley sit bottom of the Premier League with just one win to their name and are without a win in their last 10 games in all competitions.

Sean Dyche’s side finally look as though they are heading for the drop after battling against the odds since their promotion in 2016, and they are unlikely to pose too many problems for a United side that has won each of the last five meetings at Turf Moor.

Both Teams to Score? No

Burnley vs Manchester United is very much a clash between a stoppable force and a movable object. The Clarets boast the second-worst goalscoring record in the division and frankly, it is surprising that they do not boast the worst record.

Dyche’s side have scored just 16 goals in 19 games to date and a meagre two goals in their last seven league outings. United, on the other hand, boast the third-worst defensive record in the top ten, with only West Ham and Leicester conceding more.

They have managed just one clean sheet in their last six league games, but crucially kept West Ham at bay in their last game before the winter break. United appeared to enjoy more defensive control in that last-gasp win over their Champions League rivals and would have kept a clean sheet against Middlesbrough were it not for Duncan Watmore’s helping hand.

Rangnick seems to be slowly introducing defensive solidity and he will target another clean sheet against an impotent Burnley attack. United have not conceded in their last six visits to Turf Moor in a run stretching back to August 2009, when Robbie Blake fired the newly promoted Clarets to a famous victory. That run is unlikely to end on Tuesday.

Jadon Sancho to Score Anytime

Jadon Sancho was the only Manchester United forward not to fluff his lines in Friday’s clash with Middlesbrough, although he was also guilty of missing another gilt-edged chance. The winger has endured a stuttering start to life at Old Trafford, but his first goal at the Theatre of Dreams should do his confidence the world of good.

Sancho now needs to seize the opportunity with both hands. He was responsible for Ben Mee’s own goal in the reverse fixture against Burnley in December and he can go one better by finding the back of the net on Tuesday night.

Paul Pogba Anytime Assist

It is difficult to believe that Paul Pogba registered seven assists in the first four Premier League games of the season to help fire United to the top of the table. Both Pogba and United’s fortunes have plummeted drastically in the intervening four months, with United now sitting 19 points off top and Pogba yet to register an eighth league assist.

However, the French midfielder showed promising signs on Friday night in his first game in more than three months as he continues his recovery from injury, winning a penalty and setting up a number of chances. Pogba’s form is often erratic, but with his future undecided, he is likely to put in the type of performances that will earn him a big-money contract.

It was his goal that helped United to a 1-0 win at Burnley last January in a result that sent them top of the table. He may not score on Tuesday, but he can help unlock the Burnley defence.
