Friday night sees the return of a few legends to our television screens. The Bundesliga is back with winter champions Bayern Munich at home to Borussia Monchengladbach, France’s Ligue Un also returns from its winter hibernation with Bordeaux taking on Marseille. We also have Swindon taking on the might of Manchester City in the FA Cup but starting us off in our quest for value is Exeter hosting Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy.

19.30: Exeter v Portsmouth – Portsmouth to Win & BTTS
Exeter have a job on their hands here. The League Two side have been struggling of late, winning just one of their last eight in all competitions while Portsmouth have only lost one of their last five. The Grecians’ stats are a good bit better when only looking at their home form where they’ve won three of their last five, losing two, scoring in four of the five games and scoring seven in total while conceding six.
Portsmouth’s away form is even better than their overall – unbeaten over their last five on their travels they’ve won three and drawn two, scoring in four of the five, a total of seven while conceding just two. While Pompey have a good record of keeping opposition attackers quiet, the host’s scoring record coupled with Both Teams to Score landing in four of their last five at home is harder to argue with. The visitors obviously have the superior form though and the best value here then is Pompey to advance to the last 16, where they’ll face Cambridge, and both teams scoring.
19.30: Bayern Munich v ‘Gladbach – Bayern to Win & BTTS
TV: Sky Sports Football
Bayern had been stepping up the gears prior to the German winter break, winning nine of their last 10 fixtures in all competitions (only keeping four clean sheets though) and will be keen to restart their league campaign with a victory, especially against a ‘Gladbach side who have won none of their last five Bundesliga games.
Die Borussen, for all their woes, always up their game travelling to the south. Of their last seven visits to the Allianz in the league they’ve won three, although they also lost four of the others. However, they’ve scored at least one in five of those seven visits and with the hosts conceding six over their nine home Bundesliga games so far this campaign we’re liking the look of the visitors getting on the scoresheet, but with Bayern taking the spoils at full time. Bayern to Win and BTTS holds the value here.
20.00: Swindon v Man City – Anytime Correct Score 0-3
TV: ITV
Some of us are old enough around here to remember Swindon’s time in the Premier League back in the ‘93/94 season. They beat Spurs that season, drawing 2-2 with Liverpool at Anfield and held Man United to a 2-2 draw at home as well. It was a bit of a romantic disaster though; they were the first team in 70-odd years to concede 100 goals in the top flight.
Nostalgia aside, Swindon haven’t a snowball’s here. The Robins have lost their goalkeeper to the Africa Cup of Nations and while they’re in decent home form, winning two, drawing two and losing one, scoring 10 and conceding six, this Man City side are just a ruthless, winning machine at this stage.
The Cityzens have scored 20 over their last five games, conceding four and have kept four clean sheets over their last six fixtures in all competitions. We’ll see some changes to the lineup here of course but City could well run riot once more. We’re looking at the Anytime Correct Score of 0-3 to City here for a very decent price.
20.00: Bordeaux v Marseille – Both Teams to Score
TV: BT Sport 1
Bordeaux found themselves just a point above the relegation play-off place going into the winter break and their form has seen them win just one of their last five, drawing one and losing three in the league. At the Stade Matmut-Atlantique they share the same record, however, they have a great goal-scoring record there, netting 10 over their last five, conceding 12.
Marseille’s league form shows three wins, one draw and one loss over their last five and come into this one as odds-on favourites. Away from home, they’ve won three, drawn one and lost one of their five most recent league games, scoring five and conceding three. Six of the last eight meetings between the sides here have ended level, two of those draws ended 0-0, six of them ending 1-1 with the home side winning the other two. With Marseille’s dodgy record here we just can’t back them but with two good scoring records between them, the best option here is Both Teams to Score.
