It’s time for one of the most exciting fixtures of the Premier League season, Everton v Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. This fixture is always a cracker and the last instalment in 2020/21 was no exception.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

Paddy Power ambassador Phil Thompson has played in a few and watched even more so is perfectly placed to deliver some top tips for Wednesday’s biggest game. The Liverpool God is, as always, as even handed as possible and here’s his Everton v Liverpool tips.

You’re talking to a fella who’s played in a lot of these games over the years and, as you can imagine, I’ve seen a lot of these games too. Nothing surprises me and I would quite understand where the stats are stacking up here.

Liverpool have scored in each of their last 22 Premier League games, they’ve scored at least two goals in their last 17 game in all competitions – that’s 53 goals.

But this is a derby game. I was listening to Danny Murphy, and Danny is a Liverpool fan, but they were talking and they were saying, ‘Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool’. Danny was going, ‘Hang on a minute what you don’t realise is what happens in these games’.

I think I’d be saying to Liverpool one of the old sayings from Gerard Houllier, ‘Have fire in the belly and ice in the brains.’

You’ve got to be composed.

Everton will be rattled, they will come firing. We saw at the Goodison match last year what happened with Virgil van Dijk (getting injured) what happened with Thiago, the sending off with Richarlison. I would think have a look at a red card in this game, I would think that might be a good bet.

I think there’s the most red cards in this fixture in the Premier League. That is an interesting angle. I am still going for Liverpool to Win. Everton have no win in seven Premier League games, their only win in the last nine was Norwich at home.

There’s no Dominic Calvert-Lewin but the good news is that Richarlison will be back from his one-game ban after accumulating five yellow cards.

Everton were punching above their weight early in the season, and I am going for a Liverpool Win. I do think Everton will score, I think it’s going to be a lot tighter than what people will think I’m going for a slight Liverpool Win, 2-1, with Sadio Mane to Score Anytime.

I think he’ll be better value than Mo Salah and Mane’s been in terrific form, as has Diogo Jota. It’s an intriguing game. This is my experience from playing in derby games and watching derby games.
