Man City to win

PSG boast one of the most expensive and star-studded teams ever assembled and are currently walking away with the Ligue 1 title, but something is clearly not working for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

They have stuttered to a number of unconvincing wins in the French league and were held by both Club Brugge and RB Leipzig in underwhelming Champions League performances away from home.

Even their home wins over Leipzig and Manchester City were far from convincing, with the Premier League champions missing several gilt-edged chances before Lionel Messi popped up with a superb effort to put the game to bed.

City have managed to overtake the Parisians in Group A despite that setback in matchday two and can guarantee top spot in the group with a win on Wednesday.

With the exception of Bayern Munich, Pep Guardiola’s side have scored more goals than any other side in the Champions League this season and should flourish against a PSG defence that has conceded an average of more than a goal a game in all competitions this season.

PSG hardly need to rely on a watertight defence if the front three of Messi, Neymar, and Kylian Mbappe clicks, but that has yet to happen, and City will be confident of exacting revenge on their ‘oil clasico’ rivals.

Wednesday 8:00pm – Manchester City v Paris St-Germain
BT Sport 2

Over 3.5 goals

City have scored 15 goals in four games in Europe this season despite drawing a blank in Paris in that 2-0 defeat in September. They face a PSG side that conceded twice in both games against Leipzig and at least once in five of their last six outings in Ligue 1, so it stands to reason that Guardiola’s men will add to their impressive tally on Wednesday night.

At the other end, however, City have hardly been convincing. They conceded three teams against Leipzig in a bizarre game at the Etihad on the opening night of the European season and were picked apart twice in that defeat at the Parc des Princes.

They also conceded a comical own goal in their recent 4-1 victory over Club Brugge and were ripped apart on the break by Crystal Palace in the league at the beginning of the month.

While Messi and co. have hardly been firing on all cylinders, it is highly unlikely that City’s porous defence will keep all of them quiet for 90 minutes, so there should be goals at both ends on Wednesday.

Lionel Messi to score anytime

Messi may not have hit the ground running since making the move to Paris, but he has upped his performance levels in Europe. The Argentinian has scored three goals in three Champions League appearances since joining PSG, including his brilliant effort against City in September. His first league goal of the season against Nantes will additionally have given him a boost.

Messi also enjoys an excellent track record against former manager Pep Guardiola, scoring seven goals in five appearances since he left Barcelona in 2012. In fact, the Argentine has only failed to score against Guardiola once, when Bayern Munich beat Barcelona 3-2 in an almost meaningless Champions League semi-final second leg.

He has scored five goals in his last three appearances against City and has scored seven in seven appearances against the Manchester club across his career.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see the maestro continue his excellent record against both City and Guardiola.

Phil Foden to have two or more shots on target

Phil Foden’s magnificent performance against PSG in the second leg of last season’s Champions League semi-final helped to further establish himself as one of the best young players in the world, and he is well capable of putting in a similarly eye-catching performance on Wednesday night.

The 21-year-old will play a starring role in the absence of Kevin De Bruyne and could potentially find himself on the end of several goalscoring opportunities.

Foden averages more than one shot on target per game in the Premier League this season, while he has attempted an average of two shots on goal in his eight league appearances to date. He has recorded eight shots and two shots on target in two Champions League starts this season and is facing a PSG side that has faced 24 shots on target in the opening four games of the competition.

City have scored ten goals and recorded 16 shots on target in their two home Champions League games to date and are likely to pepper the PSG goal throughout as they did in Paris.
