It’s full speed ahead with club football now and we’re back with a bang after a busy first weekend following the international break. No sooner are we back into the swing of things than the Champions League rears its beautiful head complete with luscious locks. Good to see you old friend.

NEW TO PADDY POWER?

We’ll take in the action from Sporting v Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid v AC Milan in the world’s premier club competition. It’s worth pointing out that the Championship are trying to muscle in on the action as well and are serving up a full midweek fixture list.

There’s a top v bottom clash in the shape of Fulham v Derby as well as two of last season’s defeated playoff clubs with Barnsley and Swansea doing battle. I think there’s some eye-catching value about which all adds up to a rather nice fourfold. Come, take a look.

Russell Martin Swansea

7.45pm: Barnsley v Swansea – Swansea to Win

TV: Sky Sports Red Button and Sky Sports App

Has a club in the Football League suffered more from losing their manager than Barnsley? The Tykes pulled off a near miracle to make it to the playoffs under Valerien Ismael last season after he helped them stave off relegation the campaign before.

It was Swansea who defeated them in the 2020/21 playoff semi-finals before themselves losing to Brentford in the final. The two meet again here and both are in considerably worse shape than they were just six months ago. Ismael’s gone to West Brom and Swansea boss Steve Cooper also walked out to be replaced by Russell Martin.

Ismael’s replacement Markus Schopp was given the chop and Poya Asbaghi’s next on the block. He’s tasked with turning around a shocking run of 10 defeats in their last 11 games which has them languishing in 23rd, kept off the bottom only by Derby’s massive 21-point deduction.

Swansea are up to 12th after some recent improvement but they’re still a long way off their pre-season playoff target. They’ve won four of their last seven and will be looking to make it five in eight here. They’ll not face an easier away day all season and we have to be on the Swansea Win.

7.45pm:  Fulham v Derby – Fulham to Win and Over 2.5 Goals

TV: Sky Sports Red Button and Sky Sports App

Bottom meets top here as the aforementioned Derby’s forlorn fight against the drop, and possibly going out of existence, goes on. Thanks to that points deduction they sit in 24th on 0 points from 18 games, four wins and nine draws. Proof that in exceptional cases the table does lie after all.

They would be 16th without those off-field problems and when you’re struggling the last thing you want is a trip to face the on-fire Fulham. Marco Silva’s Cottagers are tearing it up and have won seven on the bounce, scoring 25 goals over that timeframe, an average of just over 3.5 goals a game just by themselves.

County have been doing okay all things considered and Wayne Rooney’s Rams pulled off a shock coupon-busting 3-2 win over Bournemouth last time out. They’ve only lost two of their last nine games but they draw a lot and if they can start turning those into wins they might be looking at a miracle escape.

But the miracle will have to start next week, you’d think. Fulham have more momentum than a runaway train at the moment and have scored two or more in eight of their last nine. Derby are spirited but they should be helpless to stop Fulham Winning with Over 2.5 Goals in the game.

Diego Simeone

8pm: Atletico Madrid v AC Milan – Atletico to Win and Over 2.5 Goals

TV: BT Sport ESPN

To the Champions League where both Atletico Madrid and AC Milan will be disappointed with their efforts so far. Atleti are 3rd in Group B with four points from four games while Milan are rock bottom with just one point. The shimmer of light for Madrid, who trail Porto by one point, is that they’ve already faced Liverpool home and away.

They’ll be targeting this must-win with the Portuguese side off for their ritual slaying at Anfield on Wednesday night. A win would put them two points clear of Porto knowing that a draw against them on Matchday 6 would see them into the knockout stages.

It’s not a vintage Atleti side and they’ve been shipping loads of goals both in this competition and in La Liga. They have been scoring plenty as well, though. As such, I’m going for Atletico To Win and Over 2.5 Goals here.

Milan have been great in Serie A but woeful in the Champions League. The selection clicked on Matchday 2 where Atletico triumphed 2-1. Back on home soil I think we’ll see Atletico claim victory again but they’ll have to do it the hard way with Milan likely to score at least once.

8pm: Sporting v Borussia Dortmund – Under 2.5 Goals

TV: BT Sport Extra 3

Finally to Group C where Sporting host Borussia Dortmund in a shootout for 2nd place. The Bundesliga side are 2nd, one spot above their Portuguese opponents thanks to their 1-0 win earlier in the campaign which currently has them holding the head-to-head bragging rights.

They’re both on six points with two to play and both have won two and lost two. This is must-win for Sporting as they have Ajax on the final matchday while BVB take on group whipping boys Besiktas. It’s worth pointing out that a 1-0 Sporting win would put them in the box seat to qualify as the head-to-head would be tied and they boast a +6 goal difference over Dortmund.

I think we might be on for a repeat of the first game between these two and a low-scoring result. However, there have been quite a few goals in both of these two’s last few games.

Unders has landed in two of Borussia’s last five but not in their last three. For Sporting, the numbers are the same but the pattern is different. But, with so much on the line it might pay to side with a cagey game with Under 2.5 Goals.
