The Draw

On the face of it, this game counts for very little. Belgium have already secured top spot in Group E and thus their place at next year’s World Cup, while Wales have guaranteed a play-off spot courtesy of their Nations League performances.

However, the Welsh still have a home play-off semi-final to play for and can go a long way towards securing one by avoiding defeat against the number one ranked team in the world on Tuesday night.

Defeat, on the other hand, would almost certainly condemn Wales to an away semi-final against a formidable side that finished in second in another qualifying group.

It is imperative, therefore, that Robert Page’s side avoid defeat against a Belgium side that they famously beat in qualifying for Euro 2016 before beating them again in the quarterfinals of the competition proper.

Belgium will not be going gung-ho to win in Cardiff on Tuesday, offering Wales an excellent chance to record their third victory over the Belgians in the last six years.

This is not the same Wales team that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals, however, and they could be forced to settle for a draw.

Both Teams to Score

Belgium and Wales have both been unconvincing at the back at stages during World Cup qualifying and it stands to reason that there will be goals in an almost pressure-free game on Tuesday night.

Belgium have conceded three goals against minnows Estonia in this qualifying campaign and also conceded first in a 3-1 win over Wales at the beginning of the campaign.

They also conceded five goals in two games at the Nations League finals in Italy last month, although Wales will hardly pose the same threat that France and Italy did.

Wales, on the other hand, have conceded three goals against a Belarus side that has one just one game and scored only seven goals in eight qualifiers this year.

Page’s side also left a lot to be desired with their defending in a 2-2 draw with group rivals Czech Republic last month and are likely to concede against a Belgium side that has scored 24 goals in seven games so far in Group E.

Gareth Bale Wales

Christian Benteke to Score Anytime

Christian Benteke marked his first competitive start for Belgium in two years with a goal against Estonia on Saturday night and can hurt a defensively fragile Welsh side on Tuesday.

Benteke enjoyed his best goalscoring season in four years last season and his career seems to have been given a much needed shot in the arm over the last 12 months.

He has made more appearances for Belgium in 2021 than in any of the last five years and has admirably fought his way back into Roberto Martinez’s plans against all odds.

He is likely to feature against Wales on Tuesday given that Belgium have nothing but pride to play for and he can lay down an early marker for next year’s World Cup by notching his second goal in as many games.

Gareth Bale Anytime Assist

Gareth Bale marked his 100th Wales cap with an assist against Belarus on Saturday and he can repeat the feat again against Belgium at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Bale has created more goals than any other Welsh player during the this World Cup qualifying campaign and can flourish against a Belgian side that has gotten progressively weaker defensively since Wales beat them in France five years ago.

The Real Madrid winger has created 22 goals in his Welsh career and is by far the most creative outlet at Robert Page’s disposal, even if his form at club level has dipped considerably in recent years.

He averages 1.2 key passes per game in this qualifying campaign and can help unlock the Belgian defence on Tuesday night.
