7pm: Sunderland v Man Utd U21s – Sunderland to Win & BTTS

The Papa John’s Trophy, the most unloved competition in all of football. And for good reason, too. However, I might be warming up the the concept as I’ve found a potentially lucrative selection to kick us off on Friday night.

Sunderland’s 1st team welcome Manchester United’s kids to The Stadium of Light in what, on paper, should be a thrilling, goal-filled game. The Red Devils’ kids have been involved in eight goals in just two games in this competition so far, beating Bradford and losing to Lincoln.

Sunderland have only played one game, beating the team United lost against, Lincoln, 2-1. That’s 11 goals in their three combined games with both teams scoring in each game other than whipping-boys Bradford when they played United. I think Sunderland to Win and Both Teams To Score is a great play here.

8pm: Juventus Women v Chelsea Women – Chelsea (-1)

TV: DAZN and DAZN YouTube

It’s been a frustrating start to the campaign for Chelsea’s Women. The opening-day defeat to Arsenal in the Women’s Super League has put them on the back foot domestically and they let us down in their Champions League opener against Wolfsburg thanks to some appaling defending.

But Emma Hayes is no mug and this Chelsea side will learn from their mistakes and improve. Up next are Juventus in what is now a must-win game after that opening-day 3-3 thriller. With Chelsea fired up and needing the points, I’m siding with the away side to beat the (-1) handicap here.

11pm: Chapecoense v Athletico Paranaense – Athletico to Win

In terms of footballing sliding-door moments they don’t come any more tragic than Chapecoense who suffered the ultimate disaster when their plane crashed on the way to the biggest game of their history, the 2016 Copa Sudamericana final against Atlético Nacional of Colombia. 71 of 77 passengers on board died, including all but three of their first-team players.

Understandably it’s taken the club some time to rebuild and they are back in the Brazilian top flight again. However, it’s not going to plan on the pitch. They’re rock bottom and look nailed-on to go down. They’ve not won in five and host 8th-placed Athletico Paranaense here.

This should be a comfortable away win, though Athletico did lose last time out. They have won three of their last five and should have plenty in reserve. Athletico Paranaense to Win keeps us moving forward.

12am: USA v Costa Rica – USA to Win and Under 2.5 Goals

Into Thursday morning where the USA’s men’s team are looking to get back on track after they suffered a shock 1-0 away defeat against Panama on Saturday night, leaving them trailing the table-topping Mexico by three points and with just a one-point cushion to Canada who sit just outside the automatic qualification spots. It means their match with Costa Rica on Thursday is a must win.

The Costa Ricans have won one, lost one and drawn three, with their first win of the campaign coming last time out against 10-man El Salvador. They’ve not been great and should be brushed aside by the US.

In terms of finding some juicy value it’s worth siding with Under 2.5 Goals. Overs has only landed once in the last nine USMNT games. Their defence is pretty good and, assuming their attack plays to form, there’s great value in backing USA to Win and Under 2.5 Goals.
