Ahh Sunday, so close yet so far away. Do you remember last Sunday, yeah? Manchester United v West Ham? That was such a good game they’ve decided to do it all over again on Wednesday in the Carabao Cup. Maybe one of those pathetic online petitions have finally borne fruit?
I mean, the names of the teams playing might be the same but pretty much everything else is different. Different stadium, different competition and, I suspect, about 18 different players actually playing in the damn thing. What I’m saying is, don’t look too much into the weekend’s result when weighing up this match.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
It was a dramatic ending at the London Stadium with David de Gea saving a last-kick penalty from The Hammers’ Special Team, known to you and me as Mark Noble. Add in a load of Cristiano Ronaldo penalty theatrics, some contentious VAR action, Jesse Lingard proving he can, and will, only play well at the London Stadium plus Ole Gunnar Solskjaer letting Gollum get the better of him at the death, it was a bit of a classic.
But with English football’s ugly stepsister, The Carabao Cup, rolling into town can Paddy’s underdogs West Ham pull off a fairy-tale result and make it to the 4th round? Sorry about that. Anyway, here’s your midweek Manchester United v West Ham Bet Builder.

Wednesday 7.45pm: Man Utd v West Ham
Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football
Man Utd (-1)
This game is going to see more rotations than the Tour de France with both sides having to contend with continental concerns as well as the Premier League, FA Cup and this game. However, the key is surely going to be Manchester United’s vastly-superior strength in depth – thank God for those official fuel retail and mattress partners, eh? By the way, this could be one for you, Tom Heaton fans.
We’re not going to see Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo and Paul Pogba etc, but The Red Devils’ second string should have enough to see off whoever David Moyes manages to get onto the field quite comfortably. Another Donny van de Beek cameo could be the icing on the cake as we see Manchester United pass the (-1) handicap.
Over 3.5 Goals
Because of the after-the-Lord-Mayor’s-show vibe around this game I think we might get a bit of a demob-happy feel with most of the 22 players on the pitch just excited to be there. Those two little words, ‘Carabao Cup’ don’t exactly set pulses racing but I think this is actually going to be quite entertaining with Over 3.5 Goals within the 90.
Michail Antonio is back from suspension and will probably start here after missing Sunday’s match. We might see Edinson Cavani start up top (if fit enough) with Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho out wide so, while it’s not quite the A team, there’s still plenty of attacking talent on display.
Mark Noble to Have 1 or More Shots on Target
And one man I think we’re definitely going to see start is Hammers legend Mark Noble. He’ll be looking for redemption after his 95th minute penalty was saved at the weekend.
If there’s another spot-kick given you know he’s going to take it and I fancy him to try a couple of pot shots from the edge of the box throughout the match in an attempt to right that wrong, in his mind at least. We need just one to trouble the keeper. At a nice price Mark Noble to Have 1 or More Shots on Target keeps us ticking along.
Anthony Martial to Score Anytime
It’s always a bit like herding cats, picking a scorer in these kinds of games, but I’ve plumped for Anthony Martial. The Frenchman was an unused sub at the weekend, indicating to me that he’s the next cab off the rank when the opportunity to rest and rotate comes.
I’m not sure if he’ll start up front or out wide but if he does start (it’s always wise to wait and see) I think Martial to Score Anytime might be your best long-range go at a goal scorer bet. Whatever happens, if it’s half as dramatic as the warm up game at the weekend we’re in for a lot of fun. Sit back, pour yourself and ice-cold cup of Carabao and enjoy.
