The Netherlands have made light work of booking their place in the knockout stages at Euro 2020 – ensuring their place in the Last 16 as group winners with a game to spare.
Coach Frank de Boer can afford to rest and rotate against North Macedonia knowing wins over Ukraine and Austria so far mean they can’t be caught at the summit of Group C.
Monday 17:00 – North Macedonia v Netherlands
A Last 16 tie against a third-place side from Group D, E or F in Budapest next Sunday is secure no matter what, but for their opponents their debut major tournament will end after this match. North Macedonia put in decent showings against Austria and Ukraine but after defeat in both, even a win here can’t stop them from finishing rock-bottom of the group.
Ahead of the game we’ve analysed the numbers from both sides from our pal Andy Robson’s cheat sheet to create a belting Bet Builder.
This could be the 37-year-old’s last ever international appearance, and the striker will want to go out with a bang – something he very well could do against a slightly porous defence. The Netherlands backline has allowed six shots on target so far and Goran Pandev should be able to trouble a slightly shuffled back five. He’s got a decent 0.71 SOTs per 90 for North Macedonia and will be looking to bow out of the international scene in style here.
Gini Wijnaldum is a man transformed for his country. He was a functional, if highly-talented, midfielder for his former club Liverpool, yet for his country he’s one of their most important attacking components. He’s traded Mo Salah and Sadio Mane for Neymar and Kylian Mbappe as he’ll be playing for PSG next season and it will be interesting to see if he can replicate his Dutch numbers in Paris. He averages over a SOT per 90 for The Netherlands and is a potent scorer and could cause havoc against North Macedonia.
Though they will make some changes for this one, Frank de Boer’s side should still be filled with enough talent to secure three wins from three group games. North Macedonia have impressed in spells at Euro 2020 but they do look a side ranked 62nd in the world and don’t have the level of quality to keep up with even a rotated Dutch side.
This selection has landed in all bar one of these two sides’ four games thus far and even though it’s something of a dead rubber, we should see that record improve. Referee Istvan Kovacs adores dishing out cards, with the Romanian Mike Dean giving out 5.88 yellows per 90 last season. Three shouldn’t be a massive issue with North Macedonia likely to be chasing a superior opponent around the Amsterdam turf for an hour and a half.
