Everyone quickly man the Walkinstown roundabout – we’re back baby. Much like the seven seals and the four horsemen signal the apocalypse, so too does the boy wonder Troy Parrott netting twice in the Pyrenees signal the revolution kicking into gear.

Not to stress the point, but this is just the third time since 2012 that we’ve put four past anyone away from home and I’m retaining my right to be excited. Now, unfortunately this friendly against Hungary means absolutely sod all.

However, for the Hungarians, it’s one last chance for them to see if they can battle it out with the big boys before tackling the European Championships. Still, there’s mercy in every game of football and if nothing else, at least we’re predictable. So, do we believe a performance born out of embarrassment in Andorra is merely a stop-the-bleeding moment or will we actually improve?

Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to put my money on the former. Here’s a Bet Builder to tame a nation.

Tuesday 19:00 – Hungary v Ireland
Sky Sports Main Event / Sky Sports Football

Hungary (-1)

They’re hardly flush with goalscoring ability – their main marksman plays for Mainz, has scored twice and is pushing 50 appearances for them.

But, what they do have is a wide-open competition for a starting XI. That makes them one of maybe three or four sides to have that going into the opening games. If you think trying to decide whether Declan Rice plays at centre half or in midfield is a problem, you should see these lads.

However, that generally means intensity will outshine their opposition. Particularly given the Ireland side to be wheeled out here is probably going to be similar to the side that gave up an opener to the mountain men near Spain last week.

Over 2.5 Goals

Well, naturally. The reason I say this is because Kenny stated his midfield pairing were considerably too deep against Andorra. To me, that’s a sign of nerves, but it also acts as an inadvertent failsafe.

Ireland’s defensive discipline is suspect at best and if you’re going to commit midfielders higher up the pitch, I’d fully expect The Boys In Green to be overrun because they’re not used to keeping such a high midfield line. May God have mercy on our souls!

Both Teams To Score

For all that we’ve become as sharp as a UKTV Gold repeat, there’s still enough reason to think we can score against Hungary.

It was this leg that made me sit back and wonder for a second – if I can’t back Ireland to score against a side like Hungary, what hope have we ever got of qualifying for a major tournament? I just couldn’t do that to myself.

Half-Time: Hungary

Oh, don’t worry – I’m not saying it’ll ever feel like a contest. This will be firmly put to bed after the first 45 and we can all go back to reading our Euro 2020 magazine pullouts that we’re all slightly too old to buy but do so anyway.
