Everton to Win

Everton lost to Aston Villa at home in the league just 11 days ago, but they are a different proposition on the road. Carlo Ancelotti’s side boast one of the best away records in the league, winning 11 of their 17 games away from Goodison Park.

Only Manchester United, Manchester City, and Leicester – the current top three in the league – have picked up more points than Everton away from home this season. Their home form, on the other hand, has been nothing short of abysmal. Everton would find themselves 15th in the table if the league was based solely on home results, with just five wins from 17 games at Goodison Park. Their wretched home form has cost them a chance of challenging for a Champions League place and they must now aim to finish as high as possible in the table and avoid the ignominy of competing in the maiden Europa Conference League.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa also boast a far more impressive away record than at Villa Park. Dean Smith’s side have collected 27 points on the road this season and boast the eighth-best away record in the division. In comparison, they are the eighth-worst team in the league at home this year and have only picked up 21 points at Villa Park.

Villa have picked up five points from their last eight home games and may be subjected to more misery on Thursday night.

Both Teams to Score? No

Everton’s excellent away record extends to their defensive capabilities. Ancelotti’s side have conceded just 15 goals on their travels this season – the second-best away defensive record in the division.

They have kept clean sheets in each of their last three away games and have also managed shutouts in five of their last six games away from Goodison Park.

Villa, on the other, hand boast a respectable goalscoring record of 49 goals in 34 league games this season. However, they looked toothless for large parts of their most recent games against Manchester United and only managed to beat Dean Henderson after Bertrand Traore found the back top corner from a ridiculous angle.

Everton will hope to mirror their performance against West Ham on Sunday, which saw them restrict the Hammers to a small number of chances and hit them on the counterattack. A win would propel Everton into the top six and a clean sheet would go a long way towards helping that.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Score and Everton to Win

Calvert-Lewin appears to have rediscovered his goalscoring touch after enduring a relative goal drought over the past two months. The English forward has now scored in consecutive league games for the first time since the beginning of February, ending a run of one goal in seven league games.

He deftly tucked away the winner in the first half of Everton’s win at West Ham on Sunday after latching onto Ben Godfrey’s precise through ball and will look to cause similar damage at Villa Park on Thursday. Everton will rely on the likes of Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to finish opportunities on the break and it is Calvert-Lewin who has been in better goalscoring form. He could be the difference in yet another tight 1-0 win on the road for Ancelotti’s side.
