Paddy’s football ambassador Phil Thompson is anticipating something of an upset as Newcastle host Arsenal in Sunday’s early kick-off. The Toon are in good form while Arsenal just can’t find any consistency.
The Gunners were a shambles for much of Thursday’s Europa League semi final against Villarreal while Newcastle has pretty much secured their top-flight status for next season. But, with the whiff of a Newcastle win in the air, how does Thommo see this one going?
NEW TO PADDY?
Sunday 2pm Newcastle v Arsenal
There could be a bit of value in this game. Newcastle, all of a sudden, are turning things around. They showed great bottle against Liverpool last week when they could’ve been out of sight and nicked a draw. There’s some fight there still and they’ve shown a bit of resilience in the last few weeks.
They are playing at home in this, they’re nine points clear of the bottom three and they’re on their best unbeaten run of the season – four games. In fact, their, only loss in the last eight games was to Brighton. They are a bit porous at the back, having let in 27 at home this season – only West Brom have allowed more, with 33.

But they are playing Arsenal – which side is going to turn for them? They’re sitting 10th – not sure many would’ve expected that. They were beaten in midweek in Europe, but it wasn’t the worst result at 2-1 with that Nicolas Pepe penalty away from home possibly getting them through in the return leg.
They have won just one of their last five league game though, and four in their last 13 isn’t much better. To me, I have to look at this for value and think Newcastle are going to win this. Allan Saint-Maximin is flying at the moment. Callum Wilson could be back fit too. There’s a lot of positivity around them at the minute.
THOMMO’S TIPS: I think it’ll be tight, but Newcastle can win this. I’d go 2-1 to Newcastle, with Wilson to Score Anytime if he plays, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Score Anytime for the Gunners
