What a couple of weeks it has been for Liverpool Football Club. They went out of the Champions League, into the European Super League, then back out of that and they still found time to shake it all about at Elland Road and get a 1-1 draw.
The rest of their campaign should play out in relatively straightforward fashion though. The Reds have six matches left to try to secure a top four finish, which is more important to them than it might have been on Monday and Tuesday. What a time to be alive, my friends.
NEW TO PADDY POWER?
Jurgen Klopp couldn’t have asked for much more obliging opponents at home this weekend. Newcastle United have drawn four and lost 20 of their league visits to Anfield since they won 2-0 there in April 1994.
The Magpies also have the fourth worst away record in the Premier League in 2020/21, and are the only one of the Other 14 teams who have yet to beat one of the six Super League fools home or away this season.

Alternative Handicap: Liverpool -1
Back in August 2019 when Steve Bruce had only just taken over, Newcastle won 1-0 away at Spurs. But since then they have just one point – which they only earned thanks to a 97th minute penalty awarded for a negligible handball – to show from their 10 trips to face the big boys.
The one thing in their favour is that Liverpool have had plenty of struggles at home this year. Klopp’s crop have just one victory from their last 10 matches in front of the Kop, albeit that was in their previous home league match against Aston Villa.
However, their four goals scored in those matches have come from chances worth a ridiculous 15 expected goals. Someone is due a hammering and Newcastle really struggle to create anything of note away from home – no Premier League team has amassed fewer clear-cut chances on the road in 2020/21, and only the bottom two sides have had fewer shots on target.
With Liverpool’s odds being understandably skinny, take the Liverpool (-1) alternative handicap to boost your Bet Builder up a little bit.
Over 2.5 goals
After all, when these teams meet there’s usually plenty of goals. At this point, you might be thinking: “Ah, but they drew 0-0 last time out, doofus.” That they did, but that was the first goalless clash between these teams since 1974.
According to StatsZone, among the 31 fixtures which have occurred at least 50 times in the Premier League, those between Liverpool and Newcastle have the highest goals per game average.
There was also at least four goals in each of the four meetings prior to that bore draw in December.
Hell, it was recently the 25th anniversary of that 4-3 match which ended with Kevin Keegan slumped over the advertising hoardings, too. What greater omen for a goal-fest could you possibly need? If you are looking for a pointer from more recent than 1996, the Magpies’ last four league matches have all had Over 2.5 Goals, and this will too.
Both teams to score
Can I shock you? I like Newcastle’s chances of scoring in this match, despite what I just said earlier.
In spite of their relatively poor goal total, Bruce’s boys have only drawn a blank in three league matches more than Liverpool have this season.
And the home side certainly can’t be certain of keeping a clean sheet. Future Ballon D’or winner Nat Phillips is an injury doubt so Klopp might have to deploy yet another central defensive pairing, and the Reds have only shut out the away team in two of the last 12 matches at Anfield.
So although Newcastle’s attack is often blunter than the concept of a European Super League, they can get on the score sheet here with Both Teams To Score.
Mohamed Salah to score first
It’s not very original to suggest Mohamed Salah to Score First, is it? But he loves playing against Newcastle, having found the net in each of his three meetings with them at Anfield.
The Egyptian was also a substitute for the Reds against Leeds last time out, and he hasn’t been on the bench for successive matches since he joined the club. On that basis you can be confident he’ll start, and Salah has scored in the match following one as a sub in nine out of the 14 instances with Liverpool. He always has a point to prove in such situations, and there’s a Golden Boot to chase too.
