This game could hardly be more irrelevant for Tottenham. Managerless, missing Harry Kane, and looking forward to a League Cup final on Sunday, Spurs could do without this distraction. Throw in the fact that they intend to breakaway from the Premier League and Champions League and may not even be competing in England next season due to their involvement in the Super League and the game becomes utterly pointless.

Spurs had little to play for in the league regardless, and Southampton, who could do with a win to bring their wretched run of form to an end, will fancy their chances of taking something from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Ralph Hasenhuttl may well view Wednesday’s game as an audition for the vacant Tottenham job and Southampton are more than capable of thwarting a Tottenham side that has been nothing short of embarrassing for large parts of the season.

Value bet: Southampton (+1)

It’s hard to make a case for Tottenham winning any game of football in the absence of Kane, who has scored five of their last six goals in the Premier League, and Wednesday night is no different. What little chance they had of causing an upset in the League Cup final has also probably disappeared in a cloud of smoke. There’s plenty of value in backing Southampton (+1) on the handicap here.

Safe bet: Both teams to score

Neither Tottenham nor Southampton are at the pinnacle of their defensive powers at present. Southampton have conceded two goals or more in eight of their last 11 league games, keeping just one clean sheet in their last 14 games in the Premier League.

They have conceded 14 goals in two games against the Manchester clubs in that 14-game spell and have conceded a whopping 56 goals in the league this season – the second-worst defensive record in the division behind relegation-bound West Brom. The chances of them keeping a clean sheet in London on Wednesday are negligible, but they have an excellent chance of finding the back of the net as well.

Tottenham’s defensive record has been shocking in recent months, although not quite as bad as Southampton’s. Spurs have conceded two or more in four of their last five league games, keeping just one clean sheet in their last six thanks to their inability to settle on a competent centre back partnership. Hugo Lloris, meanwhile, looks a shadow of the goalkeeper he once was.

Southampton, who have scored eight in their last five league games, will exploit their porous defence and it’s simply a matter of whether they can take their chances. Both Teams To Score is your safe bet for this game.

Long shot: Southampton to win and both teams to score

Southampton hardly approach this game in a rich game of form, but they will be desperate to humiliate Spurs after they arrogantly proclaimed themselves one of Europe’s elite despite not winning a trophy since 2008. The Saints have lost 11 of their last 14 games in the league, prompting a precipitous slide down the Premier League table that has seen them fall from sixth to 14th.

Their meek exit from the FA Cup on Sunday compounded their poor run of form, but they have a decent chance of taking three points against a Tottenham side that has not won a game since the return of club football and that has been enduring a frankly embarrassing start to 2021 that has seen them dumped out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb and cast adrift in the race for the top four.

With Spurs turning more than one eye towards Sunday’s clash with Man City at Wembley and missing talisman Harry Kane, Southampton can claim a rare three points in an away fixture against one of the big six. They just might have to score twice to do it with Southampton to Win and Both Teams to Score your long shot.
