There’s a nice mix of contrasting football on Tuesday, the glitz and glamour of one of Europe’s favourite competitions, the EFL Championship, and there’s some Champions League football as well. Let’s find where there’s some value in the markets.
19:00: Cardiff v Stoke – Cardiff to Win
Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff City tasted defeat for the first time since the Irishman took charge thanks to a 90th minute goal from Watford’s Adam Masina which saw the home side losing 1-2 to the Hornets. The home side are a decent price here to win, especially considering they’ve only lost one of their last 12 fixtures and are facing a Stoke side who have just three wins over their last 15 in all competitions.
In particular Cardiff’s home form is something to boast about, they’ve banged in 13 goals over their last five home Championship matches while Stoke have scored a measly three over their five most recent away matches. There’s a few injuries to both sides coming into the match, this would explain the high-ish odds for a home win here but they have the momentum and the goalscorers to heap more misery on this Stoke side who haven’t won an away league match since early December. Cardiff to Win then to get us started.
19:00: Rotherham v Watford – Watford to Win
Rotherham finally got a win over the weekend to put an end to their five defeats in-a-row that has seen them fall into the relegation zone. Watford are in mighty form though, they’ve won seven out of their eight most recent Championship matches and while Rotherham will take some confidence from their late win over Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough recently they’ve only won one of their last seven home league matches.
Rotherham haven’t played since March 3rd and will very much be prepared for this match and it’s one they could really do without losing if they have any hopes of escaping the relegation zone. That said, Watford are in mighty form and have beaten far better teams than Rotherham over their recent run. We’re going with the away side to take all three points here.
19:45: Bournemouth v Swansea – BTTS No Draw
Plenty to play for here for both sides and it should make for an entertaining match on the television. Bournemouth have won two, drawn one and lost one of their last five in the league while Swansea have won three, drawn one and lost one and are just behind Watford in second place on goal difference. Bournemouth are five points outside of the Playoff places but a win here will do their hopes the world of good.
At home, the Cherries have won three of their last five while the Swans have won three, drawn one and lost one on their travels. There’s a decent amount of goals in both sides too, Bournemouth are averaging 1.67 home league goals while Swansea are averaging 1.29. Both Teams to Score is available for decent odds but the fact that there’s only been seven draws over the sides’ respective 35 combined home/away games we can get some extra value out of it by backing BTTS No Draw here, meaning both will score and it won’t end in a draw.
20:00: Real Madrid v Atalanta – BTTS No Draw
Real Madrid were deserving winners of the first leg of this tie three weeks ago. Atalanta made a dog’s dinner of it by getting a player sent off within the first 20 minutes but the tie is far from dead. An away goal for Atalanta here and they’re back in it and, of course, as one of the highest scoring teams in European football, there are few who think they won’t score here. Indeed, this is very much reflected in the current odds for BTTS.
Interestingly, Atalanta have now kept four Clean Sheets over their five most recent away Champions League matches, keeping Ajax, Liverpool and Shakhtar scoreless over those matches. Not too shabby at all. But against Real Madrid at home it’s hard to imagine them keeping Los Blanco scoreless. In fact, Real have only been kept scoreless in one of their last 35 home matches in all competitions.
Both teams should score here, Atalanta will have to attack and Real’s scoring record means they’ll surely score. But we should see a winner. While a draw will do for Real only one of their last 25 home matches in all competitions has ended all square. We’re going with BTTS No Draw again here.
